3rd Trimester

Induction Question

I am getting induced on Sunday (yeah!) but forgot to ask my doc if i can eat before I go in.  I had heard that you are not supposed to eat during labor but didnt know if you could before.

I would think you could b/c if i were to go naturally, i would have eaten anyway b/c i wouldnt know it was coming...

Re: Induction Question

(But I had been in L&D for 4 hours prior)

  • You should definitely eat!  They won't usually let you when you get in there :)
  • You should ABSOLUTELY eat a good meal before you go in.  They won't let you eat once you're in labor and you need all the energy you can get.

After I started Pit, they only gave me broth and jell-o and it so wasn't enough.  I can't imagine if I hadn't eaten before I went in.

  • I was induced 9-1-08, they used vaginal Cytotec at 5:30 p.m. and anticipated it taking me until the next day for active labor and delivery; at that time I was told I could eat until midnight.  Unfortunately the baby did not tolerate labor well and I had a c-section at 11:00 p.m., they had to give me stomach emptying drugs before surgery because I had eaten at 3:00 p.m.  If you are induced and they anticipate a normal vaginal delivery you can generally eat until 8-12 hours before they anticipate the baby coming.
  • I am being induced on friday morning, i have to be there at 6 am and i was told NO food after midnight.
