preventing thrush (advice needed)

Hi all,

I had thrush once before and it lasted two months, so I'm pretty determined not to get it again. I think I have an infection from my son's recent bite and I might need to take antibiotics. Taking antibiotics for something unrelated is what got me thrush the first time around (I'm the type of person to get a vaginal yeast infection a large percentage of the time that I take antibiotics.)

Anyhow, I would like a reminder on the steps I can take to prevent thrush, particularly with regard to diet. I love sweets and bread but I plan on avoiding them while on antibiotics. Any other tips in this regard? Should I cut out pasta? I will also eat yogurt. Let me know what else I should be doing. I work so I can't have my nipples hang out in the air but any tips with nipple care are helpful (esp things I can do in the evenings at home.)

Thanks!

  • I read to put pump parts and bottles in a vinegar/water bath before washing in soap. Also use vinegar in the rinse cycle for bras and nursing tanks - I just use a downy ball.

  • Check out kellymom.com for some tips on thrush. You can do a vinegar/water rinse on your nipples after you nurse, and maybe try using breast shields in your bra at work since you can't air them out all day. That will help keep things less moist.

You should ask your dr. about using a topical antifungal as a preventive on your nipples. Kellymom talks about some magic nipple cream combo that has antibiotic, antifungal, and lanolin I think.
