so, can I eat tuna or not?

I'm not usually one to really worry, I believe in moderation. Today a tuna sandwich sounds amazing. Tuna is the ONLY fish I eat and its every couple of months. I dislike any other fish or seafood and sushi. Since I don't eat fish, I don't keep up with which fish I can't eat so I decided to look to the paper my OB gave me.

It says I can't eat albacore tuna but that I can eat canned tuna once a week. Well, I have canned albacore tuna, so which is it?

  • yes, you can eat a can of albacore tuna each week. :-) Enjoy that sandwich!

  • I believe albacore tuna is higher in mercury. I think they'd probably prefer us to eat the canned light tuna, which is not albacore.

  • They want you to eat canned light tuna if you are going to eat tuna.  If all you have is the albacore I would think one time isn't a big deal.  Just don't do it weekly.  Maybe just eat half the can if you are paranoid:)  Enjoy it!

  • They told me I could eat albacore no more than 1/week and chunk lite no more than 3/week.

  • I had tuna yesterday (I love tuna sandwhiches every few weeks).

That said- I also had a few sips of wine this weekend and a hot dog last week. Probably going to hell for all that. ;-)

The only thing I'm staying away from is caffine, raw fish (sushi) and booze (if it's more than sips off of hubby's glass).

  • My OB explained it to me, albacore tuna and white tuna is light because it comes from a larger fish who has been living inter ocean longer and eating other little fish longer too this makes their mercury levels more concentrated. Light tuna comes from smaller fish who are not as big and have not lived as long and therefore have not absorbed as much mercury. I eat light tuna at least once a week : ) YUM!!!!
