Cover letter help

When you are applying online, to a job posting on the company's website, do you search out the company address for the Cover letter?   Would you use the corporate address, or local address?  Or do you leave it blank?

Also, when you are addressing them at the top of the letter, do you put "Dear Hiring Manager: " or "To Whom it May Concern:" or something else?

Re: Cover letter help

  • I do search for an address.  If I know where the letter is going, I will use that address.  Otherwise I will use corporate.  I put "To Whom it May Concern:"

  • I search for an address- internet has made this much easier.

I use personal salutations.  If you don't know it, you can always call.

  • I always call and get a person's name to use in the letter. And you will also find out if it's local HR or corporate doing the hiring in that call.

  • If I do not have a name to address the letter to, I prefer "Dear Sir or Madame" I don't like "To whom it may concern".  It sounds harsh.  Good luck on the job search!
