I was recently advised i was at risk for my baby to have down syndrome. I have to have an amnio. As you would guess, I'm very upset. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the results back.
Just so you are aware, you don't need to have one. You can decline.
Before you get an amnio I would make sure to find a doctor who has done a lot with success. Also you are going to want to wait until you are in your third tri if possible, because an amnio can cause you to go into labor.
As with most tests it usually take a couple of days to a couple of weeks for results.
You DON'T have to to have an amnio just because you're at an increased risk of having a child with DS. You have to weigh the the pros with having an amnio: having a fairly certain answer (though even amnio's aren't 100%) and being prepared if your child has a special need against the risks: possible miscarriage or premature labor and delivery. You also want to find a doctor and a hospital that have a high success rate. You don't have to settle with the doctor you normally see (or someone they recommend) if you're not happy with their record for the procedure.
I believe the results for the amnio come back within 2-4 weeks depending on the hospital and lab. That's definitely a question you'll want to ask of the doctor performing the procedure.

Re: amnio
I would ask on the Bump's 2nd tri board. I'm sure there are lots of ladies who could help you. There's also this post from the Special Needs board:

Best of luck to you!
