Car seat troubles

We make the trip to see mine and DH's parents about once a month. It's a 2-2 1/2 hour drive. Charlotte used to sleep the whole time, but the past two trips she has woken up about an hour in and starts fussing which then turns into a pitiful scream until she finally tires herself out and goes back to sleep. The crying isn't b/c she is dirty or hungry - my guess is she is just bored or wants to be held. I try to console her with a paci but it only works about 15-30 seconds at a time. I know it's ok for her to cry sometimes, but it breaks my heart that I can't console her.

Anyone else dealing with this? Any tricks you can spare?

Re: Car seat troubles

  • My LO now hates the car.  For long trips one of us has to sit in the back with him and entertain him.  We play with toys, sophie, and play peek a boo.  He's usually perfectly happy as long as we're oggling him.

I'm sooo hoping this phase ends soon.  I miss the days where he was asleep as soon as we got out of the driveway.

  • I'm usually in the car alone, but if I sing he's okay or if one of us can put a hand on him he's okay. I think he thinks we left him or something.

  • I have not been in a long car ride with DS, however, he always seemed to hate the car even if it was a 10 min drive. Until I figured it out, he only cries if he's overtired and he can't put himself to sleep. Obviously he'll cry if hungry, wet etc, but it's a different cry, the overtired is this screeching-nothing-consoles-him cry, and it breaks my heart but nothing works until he falls asleep. Sorry I wasn't much help.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. DS use to fall asleep in the car but now when he's alone back there he screams bloody murder. I mean full out sobbing screaming  baby. Sometimes I want to just pull over to soothe him but I know it will only calm him down for a bit and as soon as I start driving he will do it again so I just drive a little faster to get home. My heart aches and I feel like I'm going to burst into tears myself because he sounds so sad. He did this to me last night when I was coming from a friends house and all I did as soon as I took him out of the car seat is hold him and tell him how sorry I am. He was sweaty, red and had tears rolling down his cheeks. I really hope this ends soon because nothing works, no music, me signing, or toys to look at help. When DH is in the car with me we put on Bubble Guppies on his ipad and that is the only thing that will calm him down.

  • DD has never been much of a car sleeper but she's much less so now.  I think it's a combination of boredom, separation anxiety and especially being pinned and not being able to move much.  I sing and give her toys and have mastered putting my arm back behind me so she can hold my hand.  It's killer on my neck but it works (sometimes).

  • Geez I hope it is just a phase. I have been sitting in the backseat with LO while DH drives and I can't calm her down with my voice, my touch, anything. I'm thinking maybe I need to invest in a portable DVD player of some sort.
