How far in advance to sterilize bottles?

I am 33 weeks. I was thinking of knocking that chore off this weekend, but hubby is telling me it it too early? When are you planning on sterilizing bottles?

  • Are you breastfeeding?  If you are you won't need bottles for quite some time I'd put it off.

  • I already sterilized mine and put them in the cupboard.  When it gets closer to my due date, I'm going to run them through the dishwasher on the top rack just to get rid of any dust that may have accumulated.  For me, the whole sterilizing process for the bottles, breast pump parts, pacifiers, etc. took awhile since I had to do multiple batches, so it was worth it to do it ahead of time.

  • My nesting instinct really kicked in this weekend so I did them yesterday.

  • I sterilized the couple bottles I have and pump parts over the weekend.  I  had a dream that I needed to pump and couldn't because it wasn't ready so I took it as a sign to get started.

  • Even though I plan on BF'ing, I plan on sterlizing a 6-pack of bottles this weekend, just in case we need to supplement with formula.

  • I would just sterilize one or two bottles (we went through 3 different bottle brands before we settled on the ones we used for the long-haul) anytime between now and your due date. No need to do it super early and no need to go crazy sterilizing them all when you might not be able to use particular brands.

  • I have one of the microwavable bottle sterilization systems. The instructions said that bottles are only considered sterile for two days and after that they should be sterilized again.

The general consensus that I have encountered is that bottles do not need to be sterilized for every use.  Normal soap and hot water should be fine.  I did it in hopes of getting yucky processing germs off the bottles/parts.  It sounds like that company is trying to convince people to purchase their system.

Since I will be breast feeding I know that bottles must be sterile before storing the milk in them for later use. For those bottle feeding I'm guessing the bottles only need to be clean before using.
