Re: cradle cap/dry scalp

  • I was told that cradle cap was a result of over production of oil, not due to dry scalp. The remedy I was told to try if LO got it was to use a real washcloth (not of of LO's little ones) and scrub the scalp really well when bathing. Don't use any oil in the hair and then brush really well after.

  • I used olive oil, and that worked like a charm....just put on at the beginning of a bath, let it soak in for a few minutes, then put shampoo on, then rinse with water...It's important that you not put water on the olive oil or you will have a big oily mess!  But it seriously worked after one time....

  • I do believe cradle cap is an overproduction of oil/crazy hormones in their bodies. My DD had some acne at the same time she had cradle cap and they seemed to clear around the same time also. However, putting oil on their scalp to help get the flakes off will not make more oil produce from the scalp. I used the soft brush that you get from the hospital and scrubbed it everynight(and still due even though its cleared now) then I put some baby oil on her head for about two nights and it cleared right up. • Cradle cap has a fungal component to it (and maybe the face/body bumps are a reaction to what's going on with the scalp) So ... with my DD my pediatrician recommended using selsun blue (or another 1% selenium sulfide shampoo) on the scalp - washing first with wash cloth to get rid of scale and then applying the shampoo (being SUPER careful not to let it get in the eyes) - letting shampoo sit for a few minutes and then washing off.  3x/week.  Since the face/body is a reaction to the scalp, there is no need to apply te shampoo anywhere but over the hair.

  • We put baby oil on DS's head and then combed through it with a baby comb.  It came right off.  It took a few washings to get his hair to look clean and not oily though.  We have always just used the little baby brushes that you can get in the baby section of any store.  Seem soft enough to me:)
