Wipe warmers?

Does anyone have an opinion on wipe warmers? I am debating buying one, but don't know how important it will be. I know I will feel bad if the wipes are cold. What are some other ways around that? Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Wipe warmers?

  • I honestly thought about buying a wipe warmer for my little princess. They make ones for traveling too-- that plug into a cigarette lighter, but honestly, who is actually take the time to do that? I figured that in the house, the warmer would be nice, but when you're out somewhere, you'll probably still have cold wipes anyway. No sense in switching between cold and warm. I'm sure our little ones will be just fine with cold wipes! You're choice though :)

  • Meh, I skipped it with #1 and he never seemed to mind. I've heard a lot of people say they're a complete waste of money. Others swear by them. Definitely not an essential item, but by all means go for it if you'll feel guilty using cold ones. :)

  • I think they are a waste of money. We never had one and my DS was fine with cold wipes. This baby will not have a wipe warmer either. Warm or cold, they will still be wet and that is what the baby will react too, not necessarily the temperature.

You could always use homemade wipes or washcloths and just have a bowl of warm water to dip them in for each diaper change. This will take more time and probably be a hassle in the middle of the night.

  • (lurking but want to chime in). We don't have a wipe warmer and I don't think I am missing out. The wipes are fine out of the container and really they aren't that cold. Plus you wipe for just a few seconds so if it is cold it is just a quick surprise to the tushy. I would never spend the money on one personally, it just seems like a non-essential item.

  • waste. of. money.

    1. They dry out the wipes so you go through wipes faster

    2. They are always plugged in and running so it costs more in electric bills

    3. Moisture+Heat= Bacteria breeding ground

    4.  They are not needed.  The baby will be fine.  I promise.

  • I received one with my first child and honestly, you do not need it. It causes the container to sweat inside and dries the wipes out so you have to toss them. Sometimes they really do hate the cold (especially the night changes)wipes but its over so quick it doesnt matter. I didnt use it at all with my 2nd, I just feel guilty throwing it away.Sad

  • We were given one with DD and we used it. I kinda liked it and it seemed that there was less shock when you touched her with a warm one vs a cold one! Like eveyone else said, they are definately not nessasary, but I liked ours. I didn't have trouble with them drying out or anything. It is nice at night, I cant imagine waking up upset already and having someone touch me with a cold wipe!! LOL funniest thing is, my DH thinks it makes a difference too! Do whatever makes you happy with this one...no harm either way :)

  • We never had one and don't plan on buying one for this LO either. I just think they are a waste of money. DS never seemed upset over the wipe being cold. The wipes are actually not that cold.

  • I'm a FTM and haven't even had my baby yet, but I can tell you for sure this is NOT something I will spend money on.  My kid will have to be a trooper and deal with a couple of seconds of cold during a diaper change!  I'm not into unnecessary gadgets- not only the cost, but also just the space they take up and one more thing to get rid of when baby grows.  Not worth the hassle IMO.

  • Have you thought about the germs? Sometimes you need two or three wipes for a diaper change. How will you wash your hands in between reaching for the next wipes. Germs grow best in a warm and moist environment. Just a thought.

  • This is going to sound ridiculous but I don't really care..
We have the wet Charmin wipes in our bathroom and an extra space heater in there (because it gets freaking cold!). When I use the charmin wipes, i hold it in front of the heater for a few seconds because I can't stand the shock of a freezing wipe on my butt...even when i'm doing it!
No, LO won't have warm wipes everywhere but you know what, the times they can be warm will be awesome and I may not have to hear screaming.

We'll take one wipe warmer please, thank you very much.

    Edited to add:
And yes, I completely understand the concept of warm dark environments help bacteria grow but i'm pretty sure we'll be going through tons of wipes. i mean, why wouldn't you? You will go through diapers like no other!

  • Waste of money. Baby doesn't care if her butt is being wiped with a room temperature whipe or a warm one... Do you remember getting your butt wiped by cold wet wipes when you were a baby? I surely don't... lol. If you have the money to splurge why not but I would personally save that $20 on a necessity like diapers or clothes

  • I considered a wipe warmer and did not get one because I won't have it when we are out and about so I figured it was better for DS to get used to cold wipes. When it was really chill we would bunch up the wipes in our palm to naturally warm it up a little. DS has never complained. FYI, I've heard mixed reviews about wipe warmers. Some love them, some say they dry up the wipes.

  • We used it for the first couple of months and plan to do the same for the next baby.  It isn't an essential baby item though.

  • The only benefit that sounds remotely appealing that I've heard is that if baby is asleep and your attempting a sleeping change a warm wipe is less likely to wake them up. However, as a FTM I don't think my changes are going to be that smooth in the beginning anyway that I'll be able to do a ninja change without waking baby...

  • Not a chance would I waste money on this.  My LO is not traumatized by cool wipes.

  • I got one from my Baby shower, and I loved it. I may not have bought one on my own then, but once I used it I was sold. They have moisture pads that keep things moist, so that they don't dry out, and like the box of wipes they have a lid that the wipes pull through, so you are not infecting the unused wipes, if you neglect to change the moisture pads then yes they will dry out, but it's called a little paying attention. It only takes asecond to rewet the pads or replace it with a new one. As far as using electricity...OMG really, that tiny little bit makes or breaks your ability to pay an electric bill you have bigger problems than just wipe warmers. My baby was spoiled in any safe way I could and I plan on having a warmer this go around as well! I think they are awsome! Just my opinion though :)

  • Thing is, those wipes get COLD in the winter (depending on where you are). However, I read somewhere that if you're really worried, you can warm in in your hands for a few seconds before using it on the baby. Makes sense, since you're saving on energy bills, dry diapers, and like some mentioned, bacteria. Holding it near the light bulb would probably also do the trick.

  • I think these are completely ridiculous.  How precious can we get?

  • I'm using cloth wipes and a home made cleanser. They actually do have a warmer that can be used with cloth wipes. I was considering it, but I decided not to get one.

  • We didn't have one with DD, and if anyone qualified for needing a wipe warmer, we did.  She was born in New England in October, and we lived those first few months in a carriage house that was crazy expensive to heat, so we kept it in the low 60s at night.  And she did not care one bit that her wipes were always cold.  So I wouldn't get one.  If it turns out your LO hates cold wipes, you can always buy one later.

  • We got one as a gift, and I love it! What's not to love?! Is it an absolute necessary item? No. Will your baby survive without it? Yes. But I still love it!

  • I've worked in a few daycares and have wiped SO MANY baby bottoms. We never used wipe warmers, and the babies never seemed uncomfortable due to the wipes. If your baby has a rash or something, they will be more sensitive, but that nothing a quick cuddle can't fix after you are finished changing them.

  • I'm with just about everyone else.  We are not getting a wipes warmer.  My husband was pretty dead set on getting one but we have a two story house and about 3 or 4 different rooms where we may be changing her - so either I'd have to buy 3 or 4 of them or always take her back in the room we have the wipe warmer in.  Plus out and about she'll have to have a cold wipe.  It just seems like something silly to waste money on.

  • I don't want one and didn't register for a diaper warmer. I live in Texas, where "room temp" truly is room temp most of the year. Even on the rare occasions we get snow, we don't let the house temp dip below 65. I've never met a baby so delicate that s/he couldn't handle 3 seconds of a room-temperature damp cloth against the skin. However, if I do at some time feel the need for a warm wipe, I can just lay the wipe over my arm or hold it in my hand for a few seconds while I'm undressing him and getting the diaper ready.

If somebody gets me one, I'll exchange it for something more useful. I'd rather my money and my shower guests' money be spent on other things.

  • No because of bacteria growth, drying the wipes out and I heard they are a fire hazard.... no thanks.
