Potty Training

Day 3 - done!

What a long haul. I can report that DS is starting to get it though. He woke up wet this morning, but besides that we only had one pee and one poo accident the entire day. DS isn't a talker, so it's been tough teaching him to "tell us". We're trying to get him to use the potty sign, but he's only done it once. We are like hawks waiting for him to either run to the bathroom on his own (which he is doing 50% of the time) or give us that pause or look of panic. He's holding it well in between and the day 1-type accidents are no longer. So... looking for advice on how to move beyond the 3-day time period. Should we venture out tomorrow or give it another full day at home. I have serious cabin fever... we are not homebodies (not to mention the weather is beautiful here), but I want to give this the best shot possible.

  • I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say Congratulations!

  • Get out of the house for a while!

I know that my son is very distracted when we're out, so I don't wait for him to tell me he has to go, and I don't ask him either..I just take him and have him go every hour or so. it works really well for when we're out of the house.

It helps us at home too if we have set times to go. I tell him we can't go outside until we go potty, and we can't leave the house before we go potty, and we have to try to go before nap/bedtime. It got him used to stopping and going at certain times.

Congratulations! There will be accidents, but you can handle it if you're prepared. It sounds like he's getting it, and it's time to get back to normal life...you can't focus on  potty training forever!

  • We are potty training this week too and I was dreading leaving the house but we had a dr.'s apt so I put on his underwear and brought extra clothes.  He held it the whole time and went right to the potty when we got home.  I think my son does better out in public than at home.
  • I did the 3 day method over labor day weekend and I totally feel your cabin fever.  We actually went out twice on day 2 and once on day 3.

Definetly get out of the house.  Take a couple sets of bottoms with you.  We took the potty with us on all the outings.  first outing we went for a walk.  I have a newborn so we put him in the stroller put the potty underneath it and let DS walk.  Asked him a bunch of times if he had to go and sat him on it outside.  Second outing was to a family cookout.  I sat to the side and had the potty sitting next to me and he used it 2 times while we where there.

This weekend we went to a festival.  I took the potty and I also have a little portable potty.  I DS go before we left home.  Pulled out the potty and sat it on the sidewalk and DS sit on it when got to the festival.  He went and I dumped it and wiped it down with wipes.  Took the travel potty with us.  When we got back to car pulled out the potty and he went again.

The key is to keep asking LO if she has to go and sitting her on the potty.  You want to keep it on her mind.  The first week after the 3 day method I know I asked him and sat him on the potty every 45 min or so.  I was tired but he has been so good and has started putting himself on the potty and saying potty before he goes.  I also have him in just underwear and a shirt in the house.  I have potty in his room so it is the first thing he sees in the morning and one in the family room where we hang out.

I am only 2 weeks out and already I see the light at the end of the tunnel where it doesnt have to be the only thing I am thinking about.

Hang in there.  The worst is over.
