Success after IF

First irrational post...

I apologize in advance because if this one sticks you will probably have to suffer through my anxiety for 9 months...

Are twinges and pains off to the side of the abdomen normal in early pregnancy? I wouldn't describe it as cramps really, more just twinges/aches.

I can't stop worrying about an ectopic pregnancy, esp. because I've been feeling twinges and mild aches around where I think my ovaries are, and occasionally lower back, and they mostly seem contained to one side (although occasionally I'll feel it a bit on the other side). Is this normal? I also have aches higher up that I'm guessing are more digestive, but I'm so scared of something going wrong again. I know I remember having what felt like ovary pain last time but I'm not sure if it was the same as this.

Re: First irrational post...

  • I did have a lot of twinges/cramps/aches off to the left side early on.  It was scary for me too, but apparently it was normal.  Hang in there.  It is all so freakin' scary!
  • Loading the player...
  • I asked my OB just yesterday and they said they are normal.  I have been experiencing them on and off since positive beta
  • from my ET thru today i'm full of twinges and cramps and pains.  granted i had OHSS so that was part of the issue but from what i hear it's all very normal in the first trimester. we're already growing and making room for baby! GL :)

  • Just for the record, I love love love FET successes!!!

I had loads of twinges/pangs very early on in my pgncy. I was told they were totally normal.

Looks like you need the PG Loss mantras...

*Today I am pregnant and I love my baby.
*I am pregnant until someone tells me otherwise.
*My past does not dictate my future. A previous m/c does not mean I will have another m/c.
*Just because something sad is happening to another poster, does not mean it will happen to you. We all know m/c and complications are not contagious!
*Hope does not make bad things happen. You cannot ?jinx? your pregnancy by creating a ticker, getting excited, or telling someone. Live in the positive!
*And this is the hardest one: There is nothing I can do to prevent a m/c from happening. Worrying yourself sick doesn't prevent a m/c. And if (God forbid) it were to happen again, I know I will survive.

After 27 months, 5 IUI's, 3 m/c's, 2 IVF's, 2 FET's (and a partridge in a pear tree) we finally had our baby boy. Our first son was born on Jan. 1, 2009.

Did another round of IVF and our girl/boy twins were born May 12, 2011
  • This was a fresh cycle, right? If so, I bet it is your ovaries. Mine hurt for weeks. I felt lots of aches and pains because they were enlarged and there was a lot of fluid from all of the follicles that I produced. I'll bet that's what you are feeling!

  • I am having the same issues you are describing.  We saw the baby & hb last week (so no ectopic) and we will go back this Thursday since baby was measuring behind.  Feel free to poor out all your anxiety here.  I will & do have the same anxiety & fears after my losses as well. Wishing you the best.

  • Yes, this was actually a fresh cycle, not a frozen (sorry Maria! Do you still love me?), so I guess it could be my ovaries, although I was on a super conservative stim schedule, but I'm sure my ovaries were still far larger than normal...

  • I am high risk for ectopic pregnancies, and had that twinge of pain in very early pregnancy and called my ob/gyn and he said it was totally fine as long as you aren't having new blood.

  • I experienced a lot of random twitches and pain early and really the entire first tri on my left hand side. It always made me paranoid and I had so many calls into the doctor that I can't even count. I hope that your twinges are signs of good hope for you!
  • I had lots of cramping the first couple of weeks after my bfp and spent the entire time worried that something was wrong. From everything I've read, it is normal to have cramps, but if it makes you feel better you can always call the doctor.

    Good luck!

  • First of all...CONGRATS!!!  I thought maybe you had gotten a bfp because I noticed the last few days you had been posting over here alot more!!  I am so happy for you!!

I have been having the same twinges and sometimes even sharp pains. I was so worried about an ectopic, but the baby is where it should be.  I have been having pains in what feels like my ovaries and also super low in my pelvic area.  I just cal. them "growing pains" and try to not freak out, .

    GL!!

  • feel free to stick up your irrational fears - I am completely neurotic - every pang, ache, tiny cramp has me freaking out. I have spotted 2x since my 5wk 2d u/s - just tiny tiny amounts with no pain and it goes away after one or two wipes - every one says this is normal and can happen as the area grows more blood vessels and the baby stretches things out -- yet everything I feel anything I run straight to this board....

  • Hey there, congrats again! Just to reassure you, I had some twinges that were specific to one side and I was absolutely convinced that I had an ectopic. But everything was fine and the pregnancy was in my uterus as I hoped. They figured out that the twinges and pain were due to my ovaries, they were HUGE after the IVF. All the best!
  • I had lots of those!
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I had them too!  Twinges and cramps.  I remember telling DH that I understood now how everyone freaks out about the early cramps.  They feel like something is wrong, and almost exactly like your period is coming.

I am just checking in for the day, but if I'm reading these posts right, it looks like I owe you a big fat congratulations!!!

  • First off - CONGRATS!!! Yes, I had this too - twinges/sharp pains and it seemed to be centered on one side. Predominantly before first beta and immediately after that first week. I kept thinking ectopic too, but far as I know it's all good.

    V. happy for you :)

  • This post is making me feel a heck of a lot better about the strange twinges/cramping/pulling that I've been having on my left side for the past couple of weeks!

Apparently we are all very normal!

  • I definitely had this the first few weeks. I was worried it was an ectopic till I had my first u/s.

  • I had the twinges too. And am happy to have you "bug" us with your worries for the next 9 months!
  • I had flat out stabbing pains in one side in early preg - I was very scared of possible ectopic.  Nope, baby was right where he was supposed to be.  Hang in there honey!!
    Wheee!

  • I got lots of twinges early on.  Your ovaries are still swollen from the IVF.  Sounds completely normal to me.  I am so happy to see you back and pray that you get to stay for the whole 9 months.  Good luck!!

  • Schmoodle! I didn't know about your BFP, congratulations!!! That's wonderful!

I had LOTs of little twinges and aches. If you are newly pregnant, remember that it can take several weeks for your ovaries to go back to their normal size. Also, your body is absolutely pulsing with new hormones right now, preparing your uterus for the stretching that's about to come.

In other words, its perfectly normal. I worried too, but unless the pain is severe or you develop a fever, its unlikely to be ectopic.  If you are really worried though, definitely call your doctor!

  • I'm totally feeling this, but I'm not really concerned about an ectopic.  It's twinges, but not really pain, which I expect I'd be feeling by this point.  I'll let you know for sure tomorrow.

I can't wait for 9 months of your anxiety!

  • So, so, so normal after a fresh IVF cycle.  My ovaries hurt for quite awhile afterwards (and I did not have OHSS).  Even without IVF, twinges/cramping is common due to stretching.  :)

  • Yes, I started getting them a full week before my beta.  I was hoping they meant something good, and they did!  They do catch you off guard though, no? :)

People talk about round ligament pains in the second trimester, and meanwhile I already understood that sensation beginning with week #3. :) Go figure, but I consider them a good sign!

Not irrational at all!  Best wishes!!! :)
