I so look forward to Football season and your FB updates!
I do have one question-
what is the meaning behind the chant, " War Damn Eagle"?
War Eagle is our battle cry. The story goes like this...
The battle cry dates back to the first time Auburn met Georgia on the
football field in 1892 (which, btw, is the oldest rivalry in college football) and centers around a spectator who was a veteran
of the Civil War.
In the stands with him that day was an eagle the old soldier had
found on a battlefield during the war. He had kept it as a pet for
almost 30 years. Auburn was losing and the game was nearing the end. According to witnesses, the eagle suddenly broke free
and began majestically circling the playing field. As the eagle soared,
Auburn began a steady march toward the Georgia end zone for a thrilling
victory. Elated at their team's play and taking the bird's presence as
an omen of success, Auburn students and fans began to yell "War Eagle"
to spur on their team. At the game's end, the eagle took a sudden dive,
crashed into the ground, and died. But the battle cry "War Eagle" lived
on to become a symbol of the proud Auburn spirit.
Before all of our home games we have an eagle from the raptor center let out of a cage at the top of the stadium and it circles the stadium, flying over head, until the caretaker drops some food onto the field and the eagle lands at mid-field. The whole time everyone is chanting "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar" and when the eagle lands, "Eagle! Hey!".

The video is way cool! Love seeing everyone in their colors!
The eagle flight is seriously awesome to see in person.
We are VERY big on tradition at Auburn.
Must be so fun to be a part of!
It is!
Obviously last year with the perfect season and the national championship were incredibly awesome but really, it is so much more than just a football score at Auburn. It is all about the tradition, the people, the Auburn Creed, the Auburn Family. Very different from most schools.
I feel very, very blessed to live (and work) in such an awesome place!

Oh totally! Starting on Thursday of game weeks the RVs start rolling in to campus and every Friday morning when I pull into work there are people out saving tailgating spots. The community feeling here is incredible.
Only bad part is the stray bama fans that can't seem to find their way to Tuscaloosa...

ETA: the "damn" is just for extra effect
TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs
Very cool! Love old traditions. I think it was the damn part that was tripping me up- but I get it- for effect!
Thanks!
It is definitely one of the best traditions in college football! Along with Tiger Walk and rolling Toomer's, all three are uniquely Auburn.
