Celiac Disease/Gluten Allergy

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease in December last year, and haven't had too much problem since going on a gluten free diet.  But in the last few weeks I've noticed I've had the tell-tale diarreah, gas and fatigue, but I know I haven't had anything with gluten...  Maybe it's just pregnancy?  Are there any other Celiacs out there who have had this problem?

  • I doubt it is just pregnancy.  When that happens at our house it usually means there was some cross contaminiation or something that used to be safe changed its ingredients and I didn't notice.  I recently tried some "gluten-free" oats that caused a pretty bad reaction.  :(

  • I was afraid of that.  :(  Time to go through everything again...  Sometimes I think I would rather be allergic to eggs!

  • Sounds like you're ingesting hidden gluten.

  • Jalara - Me too!!  Once my body healed, I started having issues again, as well.  It was beyond the normal reaction I had when I suspected that gluten sneaked itself into something I ate (by accident - of course).  I went to a dietician who specialized in celiac disease and she suggested I try a dairy-free diet to see if it helped.  All of my pain went away.  She said a lot of celiacs have issues with dairy, too.  Definitely worth keeping in the back of your mind if your health doesn't improve soon.  Hope you feel better!
  • Ditto on the dairy.  Soy, too.  The proteins in both dairy and soy are very similar to the gluten protein, and a lot of Celiacs have to eliminate all 3.

  • Yep, it could be dairy, soy or even eggs. The area of the villi that produce the enzymes to digest those proteins are often damaged by CD so intolerances to those go hand-in-hand. I also know some CD sufferers who are also intolerant to corn. Check the ingredients on your prenatals. I've also heard that shampoo with wheat-based compounds (wheat germ, etc) used to help thicken hair can be a source of contamination as you might get some in your mouth when washing your hair.
