severe cramping question

I went to bed with mild cramps.  They were no big deal and similar to what I have experienced throughout my first pregnancy and this entire pregnancy to this point.  I woke up at about 6:30 with severe cramps.  They honestly felt like contractions.  The last time I felt anything like this, I was in labor.  I got dressed and tried to get things ready to go to the Women's Center (these our my doctor's after hours instructions).  I was going to leave when DS woke up.  These severely painful cramps lasted about one hour and at 7:30 have subsided.  I am left with mild cramps again but nothing that is unbearable like before.

So now I am not sure what I should do.  If this were you, would you still go in and get yourself checked out or just be glad they are over?

Re: severe cramping question

  • I would get it checked out. But with no bleeding I wouldn't be too freaked out. From what I was told last week. This is the time the ute pops out and that can feel crampy...
  • Thanks ladies!   I looked through the paper work from my doctor's office and found an after hours number which just connected me to the Women's Center.  The nurse told me not to go in unless they got worse or if I started bleeding.  She said, "there's nothing they would do anyways."  Is it just me or is that extremely rude?
  • I would definitely go in just to be safe and give yourself peace of mind.

Yes, it is! And she's wrong- they could [at minimum] listen to fetal heart rate, y'know? Ugh, that's crappy. I'm sorry you had cramps like that and I'm sorry at the attitude you got.

  • If something doesn't feel right go in-you know your body the best.  I went to the ER two weeks ago with severe cramping and ended up with an appendectomy!

  • I would most definitely go, regardless of what you were told.  If it will give you peace of mind to go in and get checked out then it's a good idea.

  • ummm, yeah, severe cramps that feel like contractions?  i'd be going in.  first of all, it could be an ectopic, unless you've already had an u/s.  it could be something totally unrelated to pg, but that warrants a visit.

  • I would def go in! Period-like cramps are pretty normal but having really bad contraction like cramps, that should be checked out. Hopefully its nothing but its always better to be safe and know what's going on.

  • Screw that nurse. For my own peace of mind I'd go in. When you m/c early on there obviously isn't anything they can do, but she can't tell from over the phone that that is even the case. I think what she said to you was presumptuous and inappropriate.
