Juice for constipation

So this might be a stupid question but nevertheless I need an answer!  The pedi recommended us to give DS apple prune juice to help with the constipation he's been suffering with.  The nurse told me to mix an oz. with formula in the morning and the same at night.  My question is exactly how to mix.  Again, this might be stupid but do I use the juice instead of water and just mix the powdered formula with the juice or do I make a regular bottle with water and powdered formula and then add the oz of juice to that?  Thanks for the help!

Re: Juice for constipation

  • Make the bottle as usual and then add the juice.

  • There is a way to "help" LO with constipation. Maybe check with your pedi but I've done it with mine and had no problem. Just take a qtip and dip it in vaseline. Draw her legs up, knees to chest and inset the qtip just a little bit in there and give it a little wiggle (very gentle, LO never even flinched as I did this) it helps the stool come out. Be prepared because my friend also did this and had a massive blowout. That will at least help pass what's there until the juice works its way down.?

  • I don't mix juice with bottles, I just give DS 2oz apple prune juice mixed with 2oz water and he usually goes by the end of the day.

We've tried this in the past at the rec. of the pedi but this time she recommended that we try the juice.

That fast?  We started giving him the juice yesterday morning and nothing yet.  He hasn't gone since Thurs. and it was so hard that it had to be painful :(

  • Nothing yet b/c LO is probably compacted.  You're going to need to do the thermometer/qtip thing...but I recommend stopping the juice if it hasn't worked in 2 or 3 days...it's working it's just that nothing can get out.  When my DS had issues they told me to just keep using the juice, and then after like a week they said to go ahead & do the thermometer.  Whoa.  When you finally get it freed up, you'll see just how great the juice worked.  Be ready with looootssss of wipes, diapers and clothes changes.  I actually just put him in the bathtub and threw away his clothes.
  • I started by giving my son 2 oz of apple prune juice (undiluted) in the morning and another 2 oz later in the evening.  He was irregular for about month and didn't go for 6 day at one point. I actually started to give him 2oz a day to keep him regular. He is regular now, but I was really worried for awhile. the on-call nurse suggested moving his legs and having him sit in warm water with 4tbs of baking soda but nothing worked like the prune juice. Good luck
