Is my DC overfeeding?

DCP has been on vacation the last couple of weeks, and my ILs and my parents have been watching her during this time. I regularly send 15-18 oz. a day to daycare, because DCP says DD usually eats anywhere between 5-6 oz. each feeding. Since her grandparents have been with her, she's only eating about 12 oz. while I'm at work. I know it's not a huge difference and it may be because the routine is different, but I'm begining to wonder now. I only ask because I'm supplementing with formula at night so I can send BM to daycare and I'm barely keeping up with her pumping. But the last two weeks, I've had plenty of BM laying around because it seems she's not eating as much. Maybe the grandparents don't force her to eat as much, or she's just more active at daycare? I'm also starting to wonder if this is the reason behind her recent nighttime wakings. I wish I could just ask DD what she thinks... Stick out tongue

Re: Is my DC overfeeding?

  • Was anything else different about the last 2 weeks? Did she nap more during the day? Does she usually turn away from the bottle when she's full? If she is good at signaling when she's full, it's unlikely your DC is overfeeding her. There may be other factors -- like maybe she's more active at daycare, or maybe she took longer naps when she was with your family (I'm guessing it was a quieter environment), so her meals were more spaced out and she ate less.

I notice the same thing with M, by the way. If he's home with DH or someone else, he eats less than he does at daycare. Honestly, I think there's a "peer pressure" element at DC. The kids see other kids eating/drinking, so they want to do it, too!

At 5 months, M was drinking 15 oz a day, so that amount seems normal to me. We introduced solids at 5.5 months, and his milk intake plateaued at that time.

  • they go thru these stages, it's not possible to overfeed an exclusively breastfed baby and since you only supplement at night, I think she's taking in as much as she needs. The whole time my DD was a baby, she ate 5-5.5oz a day at my Mom's, you can imagine the freezer stash I had. I asked the pedi who said that babies suck out all the nutrients they need; plus, she was up every 3 hrs until 10mo old making up for it. If she's peeing and pooping normally, I think she's fine!
