Pumping to Induce Labor??

Yes, I am THAT desparate.

I'm 10 days post-date and have an induction scheduled for Tuesday (report to the hospital Monday night for cervidil).

I have tried everything else except castor oil (which I refuse to do), so I figured why not?  I just broke the seal on my pump's box.

Anyone know how long you should pump in a session if the goal is to induce labor?  I have a dual electric pump (Ameda Purely Yours).

Re: Pumping to Induce Labor??

  • Look it up, but I think its for 10-20 minutes at a time, with breaks in between. Good luck! I wouldn't do castor oil either- but at this point, everything else is fair game, IMO. :)

  • Never tried it but what I see on TV (you know like that's the best advice...) is 30 minutes should show some results or it's not going to.  But pumps have different settings and sometimes it's used just to speed up contractions not to bring on labor that hasn't started.

You can't delay the induction for a few days longer to see if things start on their own?

No.  My doctors won't let me go past 14 days.  At my last appointment (Tuesday), I was 0 dialated or effaced and baby was not engaged.  I feel like he is lower now, so I'm hoping going on my own is still a possibility but maybe not.

    I've tried:

    • walking
    • sex
    • EPO (only by mouth though)
    • bouncing on the birth ball
    • acupuncture/acupressure - on Tuesday and have been doing self-acupressure since.  Practioner said he would see me again on Sunday if I wanted.
    • eggplant parmesan
    • Bring On Labor cookies
    • eating pineapple
    • nipple stimulation (manual before and now 10 minutes with the pump)

  • There should be no 'let'.  You are the consumer, they are the service provider.  If YOU are comfortable (if you're not, then that's a different case) with putting off the induction a bit longer then tell them that you have made an informed decision to delay the induction.  Have you seen the pamphlet on the Rights of Childbearing Women?  If not, you can read it here.

Personally, I don't advocate for doing anything to get labor to start when you want it to versus when the baby is ready.  Even natural methods are interventions that come with their own set of risks. Babies come when they are ready to be on the outside - it is a signal from the baby when their lungs are fully mature that begins the process of labor.

  • I pumped for three evenings before I went into labor.  I did 30 minutes each time--15 minutes per breast.

Out of curiosity, why no castor oil? I used it to induce successfully with no problems for me or DS. I wasn't a huge fan of all the pooping, but it did mean I didn't poop while pushing!

I mean, it was gross. But I'd rather do that than be on pitocin like my first birth. That stuff hurts!

  • Pumping worked for me.  I used my double electric and got my first contraction about 10min in.  I was exactly 41 weeks, and had tried twice between 40w and that day with no luck.

  • Pumping didn't work for me.  I was 10 days overdue as well when my doc called to schedule my induction date.  I did the castor oil that night (only one dose of 2 oz.) and went into labor within two hours.  I went to the bathroom once and that was it.  My 10 pound 7 ounce son was born ten hours later.  Trying the castor oil was TOTALLY worth avoiding induction in my opinion.  ps if you DO end up taking the oil.  I would recomend taking it with a little bit of strong juice {I did orange pineapple}.  It goes down in two gulps instead of trying to drink it in smoothie or something.

  • I'm only 39 weeks and I've been having contractions for over a month some are very strong and sometimes I feel its real labor, but my doctor has seen no change Sad.  She believes that most likely I will have to be induced but we really don't want to.  I have been trying everything except the pumping or oil I'm not really a big fan of it.  Please let me know how the pump works for you and I wish you the best of luck with your baby.
  • Funny you should ask this, because last night I decided to pump (manual, not electric) to try and get some colostrum out (it said in Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding it's a good idea)... and since then, I've had contractions.

Last night they were about 15-20 min apart... and for the past hour they've been under 5 min apart!

Today is my due date, but I'm trying not to get too excited :-)

I say, it certainly can't hurt to try!  Good luck!

  • I second this! I took castor oil at 41 weeks and 4 days and he was born at 41 weeks 5 days. No problems, no meconium. Pooping like crazy sucked but I just chugged gatorade all day.

Edited to add that I chugged 2 oz castor oil mixed with 2 oz of Knudsen Raspberry spritzer. I recommend mixing it with only a small amount of liquid so you can chug down it.

  • I was 0 dilated and barely effaced the day I went into labor. You are 39 weeks...way too early to think about inducing. Your doctor sounds like she just wants to induce.

  • That's how i feel ... She told me I wouldn't go pass 41 weeks and my next appointment is this Friday and I'll be 40  weeks by then, and we would talk about setting up a date to induce me.  I'm a bit afraid to be induced, I was with my sister when she was induced and it was a long and painful process for her.

Schedule it for as late as you can. And I'm sorry, but your doctor has no idea if you're going into labor before 41 weeks (at 39w). I had no progress and baby was high- 48 hours later she was in my arms. You can tell your doctor you want to wait until 42 weeks for an induction if you are comfortable with that and all looks good with you and baby.

  • A week ago she was still high but everyone is telling me that my belly looks a lot lower and I want to wait as long as I can so if she's not born by my due date then I'll wait the extra time, I'm a little impatient but as long as the baby and I are fine I can wait.  Thank you
