Fert Report :/ and WWIFVD?

Only one egg fertilized normally.  :(

Not that we're even there yet but I'm leaning towards not doing the transfer.  What would you do knowing the following:

I hope this doesn't upset the OOP ladies since we went through job changes, massive pay cuts and put off plans to move out of state to get it, but we have insurance coverage for IVF.  The insurance covers 3 IVF cycles.

They define a completed cycle as having a transfer.  Therefore, if I have 3 retrievals, and no transfers, I haven't used one of my attempts.  If I have three transfers and 3 BFNs, I'm not certain that I would get another ER covered.

Assuming this embie makes it to day 5, should I transfer it, or try to freeze it?  Should I transfer it with one of our frozen embroys?  I'm trerrified of a twin pregnany but no one really thinks my loss had to do with twins, and given my prognosis, all REs think I should transfer 2.

If we don't go through with the transfer, all we've lost is time (I can't cycle again until November due to work travel.)  But there's no way of telling what will happen in the future either.  I'm thinking irrationally and need some advice.  WWIFVD?

 Thanks!

Re: Fert Report :/ and WWIFVD?

  • Oh honey, I'm so sorry only one fertilized and you have to think about any of this. We've never been lucky enough to have any make it to freeze. However, I guess you have to think about how you would feel if this one doesn't make it to freeze... Would you be ok with it or sad/mad that you didn't do the transfer? If it were me, I would do the transfer now and also transfer one of your frozen embies for a total of 2. Like you, I lost twins, so I know what you're dealing with, but if the RE and others think 2 is the way to go, I would be willing to transfer 2 again. There is no right and wrong in this scenario- you have to do whatever you and your Dh are most comfortable with. Best of luck!

  • Hi Jackie. I am so sorry that only one fertilized! I know it is disappointing and having to make this decision now makes it even more sucky. So if you do the transfer would this could as your 3rd IVF? How many snow babies do you currently have?

Like illinigal I haven't been lucky enough to have anything make it to freeze either. But I think I would lean towards transferring 2 (the 1 from this cycle and a frozen one) if this did not count as your 3rd IVF cycle. However, if this would count as your third IVF cycle I would probably base the decision more on how many snow babies you have. If there are a good amount then transfering now could be a good idea.If you have just a few I might decide to put it off from a financial perspective to get a couple more fresh cycles in and bank more snow babies.  I hope that doesn't sound terrible.. but I am OOP (only had 1 covered cycle), and it is so so so damn expensive to keep cycling. If there was a way to work around it and for there to be less OOP, even though it might take a little extra time I would probably go that route. I hope this help, but like illinigal said, you really have to do what's most comfortable for you and dh.  Good luck with the decision!  My fingers are crossed for you and sending tons of T&P.

  • Hum, that's an unsual policy...bc the transfer is the cheaper part.  Mine defines a cycle as retrieval.

If they wouldn't pay for anymore ER's...i would prob go ahead with the transfer.  What are the chances it would be frozen?  Freezing standards are so high at my clinic, that i would have to suspect mine wouldn't make it.

Sorry u have to make this choice.

  • You're funny, this would never upset me being an OOP lady!  I think you should go for it since you have one good looking embie.  I know it's such a tough decision though, good luck in whatever you decide!!
  • Oh sweetie that is tough.  Like you my RE says 2 is the way to go but my MFM is dead set against twins.  I always try to remember that it is the RE's job to get us pregnant and two has the best chance of that but it is the MFM that has to keep us pregnant.  Anyhow, I think if it made it day 5 and was looking good I would transfer it alone...if you did a three day transfer and it was just looking so so I would maybe add a frozen.

I know it is less about money but going through all that stimming and high doses of FSHs has to be hard on you.

Good luck with whatever you decide is best for you and DH though!  I am always here for you if you want to chat.

Lots of love and luck to my PAIF/3T/IF Veteran ladies, especially my dear friend Zookie. Congrats to Papps, Teach84 and Starbuck on their little ones.
  • I would go ahead and transfer that one embryo.  I realize that one person's success does not mean it will happen to someone else, but my DH's cousin and his wife are the parents of a 16 month old girl who is the product of an IVF cycle that resulted in only one egg fertilizing and with a low grade.  GL whatever you decide.

  • I would not.no way. With that type of insurance coverage, I would do cycle after cycle and freeze the embryos. Do a transfer when I got to 2-3.
