Bug Bite Reaction

Hi Ladies,

I haven't been on here in months! Anyways, my son has been getting HORRIBLE bug bites. I'm assuming they are mosquito bites. He first got like six of them on one leg. They start out like hard, red nodules then by the next day they are oozy then scab up. Since then it has happened on another leg and on his face. I'm hoping it is just mosquitos and not spider bites! Has anyone else experienced this with their little on?

Re: Bug Bite Reaction

  • That doesn't sound like a normal mosquito bite to me, at least not one that I or DD have ever had.

Did you call your Pedi's nurse and just ask about them? Make sure they aren't concerned and they might be able to tell you what they are/best way to treat them.

My neighbor is a nurse so I had her look at them the first time. Of course it was on the weekend! She thought it was likely a reaction to a bite. They don't seem to bother him. The first time his lymph nodes were swollen in his groin area, but I haven't noticed that since. My neighbor thought that might be a reaction too. She didn't seem too worried. I had her come over a couple days in a row to check them.

Just wanted to see if any other children have this issue. I want to get him into the doctor, but my husband's company was sold so he is in between jobs and we are without insurance. So frustrating.

That does sound frustrating!! Good thing you have a helpful neighbor. I haven't seen anything like that on DD. Your DS just might be a little more sensitive than average to bug bites.

I'm definitely thankful to have her right across the street! I'm hoping he is just a little more sensitive. I'm ready for this hot weather to end and Fall to arrive...mosquito free :)

Anytime a child has oozing sores, you'll want to rule out impetigo (a strep or staph infection in the skin). I know you mention that insurance is an issue, but, you should really get him looked at- it's usually nothing an antibiotic can't fix up, but, it's contagious and is often caused by MRSA these days.

Good luck- I hope things get better for you (and him!).

Thanks for the info. I will definitely have him checked out. I know how dangerous that can be. We have a few family friends who are doctors so maybe I can take advantage of that!

    Thank you!

  • My DD gets a horrible reaction to bugbites as well.  You are not alone.  This week one was on her eye and it almost swelled shut.  I agree if they start to ooze to call the doctor.  I took her to the doctor for some on her leg and they said they could have impetago but she was negative.  GL!
