DH and I really need to get on this. We both have small policies through our employers, but its probably not enough.
Do you have a seperate policy or just add on to your employers coverage? Do you and toyr DH both have policies? Would you recommend who you deal with?
Thanks. I guess I am feeling my own mortality turning 30 and all
Re: Life insurance policies
Yeah, you're not alone, we need to up ours too. We don't do anything through work just because it may not be easy to take it with you if you leave. I think if you do an independant policy than at least you will have it no matter where you work and you won't have to go through a new physical and apps again.
We are with The Hartford.
I need to sit down with an agent to figure out what kind and how much. We need enough to put the 3 girls thru college...and for Josh & Bobbi to raise Michelle if anything happens to us in the near future.

We're self-employed, so we have to get individual coverage for everything, but we have separate policies. ?Both of us have policies through the same company that has our health insurance, auto, homeowners, etc. ?It doesn't hurt to get quotes though - find out how much it is through your employer and through different companies, and then make a decision. ?I've heard a good rule of thumb for how much life insurance you need is 10x your annual salary. ?We also are looking at getting small policies on the girls, just to cover things like burial and funeral expenses, which I hate to think about, but it's a good thing to have.
We did ours shortly after B was born, and they are in addition to those through employers (mostly since I am self=employed now, too).
Ours are through USAA, but unless you have military somewhere in your family, you won't be able to use them. If you do (parents, grandparents, etc.) then definitely take advantage.
DH is a financial planner and deals with this type of stuff. We both have coverage outside of what work provided. The good thing about having additional coverage outside of work, is that you have coverage even if you leave your place of employment.
DH is a broker meaning that he can provide clients with quotes from many different companies. Although, he mainly deals with 4-5 companies that have a good reputation.

Joe and I have a $1 million term policy each - with a 20 year term.
Joe has a $100k whole life policy.
I have a $250k+ term policy thru my employer.
My children have $100k whole life policies.
My dh has a policy through work but we both have individual policies outside of that. We are through AIG, which I would have recommend prior to the current issues. I don't "think" there will be any issues with our policies but we are keeping an eye out just in case.
DH and I worked with our finacial planner to find out how much life insurance we needed. He has his work policy (I used to when I worked FT, but my current employer can't offer benefits to me right now working PT), we each have term policies through USAA and he has a whole life policy that the financial guy hooked up for us. He has a lot more than I do, and we probably need to talk about getting a LITTLE more for me now that I no longer have the work one.
