Sugar Water

I have a pretty fussy baby in the evenings starting around 5/6 in the evening to about 10 at night. He gets so worked up, screams, cries, won't latch, etc. I called his pediatrician about it and he doesn't seem to think it's colic. He did, however suggest sugar water (2 cc's every 4 hours). Has anyone heard of using sugar water before? Has anyone tried it? Generally, WDYT about giving your baby sugar water? I guess I will try it as a last resort Since it was recommended by Wyatt's pediatrician but I don't think I'm totally sold on the idea.

Re: Sugar Water

  • There is a sugar-water product used in the NICU to get babies to latch and suck.  It's called SweetEase.  It was a God-send when DS1 was in the NICU.  He physically couldn't eat by mouth, but we needed to increase his sucking reflex and strength, so our occupational therapist would dip pacifiers in this SweetEase solution to get him to latch and suck.  It also causes a release in endorphins and helps with pain from shots, catheters, etc.

I wouldn't come to rely on it, but using it occasionally can't hurt.  GL!!

  • Ian was given sugar water in the NICU for pain management. It seemed to really help him. We haven't used it at home for fussiness, but he isn't a super fussy baby.
