A 6 year old dies in an accident that (by the photos) appears to be not much more than a fender bender. He was not even wearing a seat belt! I don't understand the chances that parents take with their children's lives! Makes me shake my head in bewilderment. Six years old....
Re: I don't understand (child death mentioned)
Oh my this is so sad. Yet another reason to justify myself being car seat crazy. My daughter will still be in her harnessed car seat at 6 not just hanging out in the back seat. I understand that accidents don't happen that often but I'm just not willing to take a chance when it is so easily preventable.
prayers for the families involved
stories like this make me sad and sick at the exact same time. My nearly 6 year old, is just getting into a booster now. She is fully booster trained, but without asking will hop into a harnessed car seat. She is 46 pounds, and has a short torso. She met my to minimums to go into a booster full time. She was done kindergarten, and over 40 pounds. My four year old, is going to be in a harnessed car seat for many years to come. She is only 33 pounds, with a 13 inch torso, and not mature enough to booster. Yes she only turned four on the 22nd. She will have the same rules as her big sister done kindergarten and over 40 pounds. They have been riding in Frontier XT's, but we went from a one car family to a 2 car family, so we put the second frontier in my DH's car for Leah, and bought 2 dedicated boosters for Summer.

It's horrible isnt it? But car crashes are the #1 cause of accidental death for children in the US, so they happen a lot more than people realize. And you're absolutely right, a lot of those deaths were very likely preventable.
That is so sad.
This is exactly why I called the police on people that I saw driving with a small child unrestrained in the back seat. The kid was probably 3 or 4 years old. They were parked right next to me, and as I was getting DD buckled in her car seat (I was in an SUV, they a car, so I could see right in) after a trip to the grocery store, I could see the child was not restrained in any way. Not to mention that they were handling OPEN liquor bottles in the car, and I watched as the driver went into the liquor store located right next to the grocery store. Unbelievable.
That is so sad!! I was thinking this...who knows what the situation was but I used to drive a van for school aged children for an after school program and I had a 6 year old who would take his seat belt off. It was terrifying and I had to tell his parents with my director that we would not transport him if he kept doing it. So sad.
This is horrible. We used to see unrestrained kids pretty often when I was an EMT for an ambulance. We just used our radio to call it in to the police. Also spent alot of time going around to K and 1st grade classrooms during "safety week" promoting seat belts.
: ( I have a 6 year old who is always boostered with the seatbelt and she knows not to take it off (bc that is how she was taught) --she has outgrown the length for all 5 point harnesses just FYI. Also, she is never in the front seat.
So sad though.
