Baking soda question

I read that I can use 1/2 cup baking soda to strip my diapers.  I'm about to do that now, but it got me curious...

Instead of laundry detergent, couldn't I just always use baking soda?  Is there a problem with doing that?  I've been using all free and clear (a 5 star on the cloth diaper detergent chart) and not using much of it at all.  We have an HE washer and it will be on a SUDS cycle for 30 minutes if I use the recommended amount.  The combination of this washer and these diapers is about the push me over the edge!  It seems like every time I wash them, they have the ammonia stench again and then I have to strip them.  Grrrrrr
