not to hog the boards....low lying placenta question

today the old OB said that his report says that i have an anterior low lying placenta...and that i would need another US to make sure it moved up...and i quote "he wants to know before there is a bloody mess in the delivery room"....hence again my move to another OB office...no bedside manners...

anyway What is the story with low lying placenta? right now i am praying that it moves up...actually when my bladder was full at the high risk office i was more than 3cm away and he (high risk ob) said no big deal.

Re: not to hog the boards....low lying placenta question

  • From what I've heard/read, a placenta that is low at/around 20 weeks almost always moves up by the follow-up u/s done around 35 weeks.  So I wouldn't worry about it until you have a third tri u/s to check on it's location!

My CPM only does one u/s for VBACs (unless you want to find out the gender at 20w) mid-third tri to make sure the placenta is not over the c/s scar.

Your old doctor sounds like a tool and trying to use every scare tactic he could.  Good riddance!

  • If it's more than 3 cm away, it's no longer low lying.  If you're there already or really close, you probably have nothing to worry about.

  • I found out yesterday that I have an anterior placenta too, but don't know if it's low-lying yet because I'm only 12 weeks so it'll move from now until delivery. The possible complication is that it'll stick to the c section scar, causing possible hemorrhaging, and also the dr may have to manually go in and get it b/c it won't come out on it's own. It can also tear if you have a uterine tear. It can also mean no issues at all!! It's just good to monitor it, know where it is, and be prepared for anything. I read a lot about it online and will talk to my midwife more about it next appointment.

    Wow.

90% of low-lying placentas diagnosed early on will move up.  It sounds like yours already has.
