I must be nuts.

I'm sitting here looking up marathon training schedules.

Um, helloooooo, I'm struggling finding time to train for this half!

    Uh, thanks for the optimism?

Personally, I would rather my body be trashed with doing healthy things to it than being overweight and unhealthy.

  • Have you done a 1/2 marathon?  If so, I say GO FOR IT!  You have the right attitude and the right dedication to do a marathon and do it well.

  • My half is in 25 days.  I feel confident that I will do okay in it.   I'm already running 11 miles at about an 11:05 minute pace (sure that could be speedier, but shoot!)

This is my hypothetical plan is to do a local 5k run in October, 5k Freedom Run on Veteran's Day, the turkey run half the Saturday before Thanksgiving, a 5k in December, rest, and then start training for a full in April.

I *think* it is something that I want to do, and I worry that if I don't do it now, then I will not ever do it, you know?

I'm going to see how the rest of the year plays out first.

P.S. FFG--- the full I am thinking of is in Abiline.... :P

  • You've complained of knee or whatever injuries from the running that you do now. Marathons hardly baby your joints.

    I meant the good luck.

  • Take your time working up to a marathon. And definitely cut back whenever you're struggling (like your toe problem you recently had).

Dad has run numberous halfs and 2 fulls, along with lots of 5k's and 10k's. He's only been running since late 2006 :)  You'll get there, but most important, listen to your body! I'd plan on waiting and running a full in the spring.

  • you're a little nuts...but that's okay!  Go for it...what's 13 more miles? Big Smile

I'm pretty sure there is a happy medium!  Listen to your body!  :)

So, why not just ask me how my knees are doing instead of a negative, defeating comment like you made? Then followed by the obligatory 'Good luck'... Huh?

Btw--- Honestly, my knees feel better 19/20 days than they have in the past 5 years.

My toes?  Apparently I have a fungus causing the darkened toenails, and the inflammed toe has went away since buying new shoes.

GHM-- that is my thought (I don't dare to say plan!!) is that maybe it would be a possibility to do a full in the spring.   I don't know.  I will wait until I get this half under my belt, and maybe another half.   Maybe the 13.1 is the length I like... Maybe it is 10k.  I don't know.

I need to get into a routine since my routine has changed since school has started.  And the triple digit heat needs to break!

  • Your title says "I must be nuts."

It's not a stunner that someone's going to agree with that statement. If you think that was so negative and defeating, you are a little hypersensitive.

  • I think you can totally do it, and I don't think you need to wait a super long time and do a bunch more halves if you don't want to. I ran the Boston marathon this year. Started training Dec 1 for the race in mid April. Prior to getting on my training plan, I was running 3-4 miles a few times a week, nothing further than 5 miles. I finished in 4:07 (9:27 pace) and did not get injured. The plan I followed had lots of rest days and step back weeks, and only 4 days of running per week, which I think helped me stay healthy and not get burned out. GL if you decide to go for it! I am so glad I did it, but wont again (sticking to halves and 10/5 K's) bc it truly takes over your life for four month. Time running, recovering, not drinking bc you have to run, etc.

  • Lari - you have to admit that your initial response was out of line. You see r9's posts here about running and know how dedicated she is and also how great she's been doing w/ improving her overall fitness and phsyique. Implying that by being healthy is is trashing her body was really not cool and is most certainly not the typical case w/ "casual" athletes. And your obligatory "good luck" couldn't have sounded any less heartfelt.

Pretty much what I was going to say, only you said it 20 times nicer.

I WISH I had the dedication r'niner does. She rocks.
