Hot dogs....

I want one SO bad.

I forgot to ask my doctor about them today.  He did say that there is talk about lunch meat but instances of listeria are quite rare.  He said his wife ate lunch meat through her pregnancy so I shouldn't be too concerned, and if I am then heating it will kill the potential bacteria.

As far as I know, and have googled, the danger in hot dogs is nitrates and potential listeria.  Correct me if I am wrong, but nitrates are really just preservatives, right?  Which are not good for you, I know, but ok in moderation?  And as long as they are cooked completely that should kill any listeria.

Has anyone asked their doctor about this?  I don't think my doctor would be concerned as long as I cook them and don't eat them every day.  And, honestly, if I want one I am going to eat it.  I tried to buy what seemed to be the healthiest ones (Schneider's Country Naturals) without going veggie or icky turkey.  LOL.

I went through a month long fixation on corn dogs when I was pregnant with DS, and we're both here to talk about it ;0)  I just buy the nitrate/nitrite free ones from Oscar Meyer since DS is loving them right now and I have had a few. My doctor said just to heat them through to kill any bacteria, no worries!

get an organic one, cook it really well, and enjoy it!! I'm sure as long as you don't eat them all the time, its fine  :)

My doctor told me that lunch meat should be heated first. She said it was okay to eat the occasional hot dog at home so you know it's cooked properly. I know there are a few brands that make nitrate free hot dogs out there but I don't think I've ever had them.

I ate hot dogs and lunch meat and other things you aren't "supposed" to eat during my last pregnancy. My doctor said if you are craving it, eat it. Just do so in moderation. :)

So funny you posted this...I just bought some all natural beef organic no nitrate (basically as healthy as a hot dog can be) at Whole Foods today.  I warm it up in the microwave.  I think they are fine.  I would not eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner or every day but I can't see them being bad for you every now and then.

As long as you cook the hot dog at home, you should be fine. The concern is buying them, where they may be improperly cooked and improperly stored.

And why did someone have to mention corn dogs? Now I want one!

I read that as long as they're cooked they're fine. Thought that was weird b/c who the hell eats uncooked hot dogs! lol Anyways, cook 'em thoroughly and get the most natural ones you can, like Hebrew National or the Schneiders ones you mentioned.

I had one today.  It was heavenly!  Loads of relish and onions on it.  MMMMMMMMM  So freaking good.  Honestly it's not summer without hot dogs.

Yes, nitrates are preservatives, and I personally am not worried about them at all.

The maternal-fetal specialist I saw with my last pregnancy said the same thing your doctor did about listeria and lunch meat, but I still heat mine up because I feel more comfortable with that. Hot dogs are the same deal.

Applegate Farms makes really good nitrate-free hot dogs. Their wieners are all muscle meat too (lol).

OMG!  My mouth is watering.  I want to send my husband to the store to get me some hot dogs or better yet corn dogs.  Sometimes the school serves them, but I won't eat that food any more.  Last year almost the entire school came down with a bad stomach flu including the head cook.

YES!  They truly are amazing.  I pick these up at Meijer for 5 bucks a pack - or at trader joes too...

Also - My dr said I could even go to Portillos for Hot dogs and Cheese Fries - but I couldn't send DH for them - I had to be there because we have to eat it hot - that will help with the listeria.  She also said the lunch meat - AND things like Chicken salad if it is made by a company or by a restaurant.

Hot dogs are fine heated up.  But, I would buy nitrate free, if it was me.  This recent article changed my opinion on nitrates (I think there was another recently too): https://www.huffingtonpost.com/neal-barnard-md/processed-meat-cancer_b_919034.html

I'm cutting nitrates out of my kids' diets, including the one in utero.  DD loves hot dogs and I would never be able to live with myself if I knew she had colon cancer b/c of that someday. It doesn't help that I have a 28 y/o coworker with inexplicable stage 4 colon cancer right now either.

I just talked to my doctor about this exact thing!! She said hot dogs are fine as long they are properly cooked to high temperature before eating them...
