Parenting after a Loss

IUD?

Hi Ladies!

I haven't been on the bump in FOREVER (except lurking a little here and there). But I knew right where to turn when I have a question...anyone with IUD experience? I am thinking about getting either Mirena or Paraguard after DD is born in December. This pg was a little earlier than planned and we think we want a 3rd but not until DS is in kindergarten. So tell me your experiences with either and would you recommend...TIA!

  • I got the Mirena. Now that the spotting has stopped, I like it very much. My ob says he puts in more IUD's than he gives an Rx for BCP.

I had Mirena.  I hated the persistent spotting/bleeding that happened for the first couple of months but my doc gave me some estrogen to take and that stopped it.  I can't complain really, it kept me from getting pregnant for three years, I had light periods (and not always monthly) and I was able to get pregnant relatively quickly after it was removed.  I did notice that I had bad headaches with it which stopped when it was removed and my sex drive was basically non existent until I had it removed.

This is why I am looking at Paraguard too...non hormonal!

  • I had the Mirena for 5 years and had no side effects or period the entire time.  So, yes, I PPH it.

  • My Mirena experience wasn't the norm but it's worth chiming in because you should know that sometimes these things happen. I had every side affect in the book (bleeding, inability to lose weight, mood swings, depression, etc), it didn't stay in place and over the span of 6 months I had 4 heavy, clotty, painful periods that by OB told me were most likely forced miscarriages by the Mirena. After being a PAL girl anyway, this was horrific to me and they removed it immediately. I've been using a diaphragm ever since and I have to tell you I am very pleased with it.

Again, that's not what normally happens with people on Mirena. But I thought I'd put it out there. Also, like the others have said, I had the "spotting" for about 15 weeks after it was put in. Between then and the last 6 months it was in, I had light, irregular periods.

  • Thanks for your input ladies! I think I still need to talk more with my OB before deciding. And thanks Ashley for sharing your experience. The reason I asked on here was all my IRL friends who have had Mirena have had experiences like yours. Not that many of my friends have tried it though.
