We took the neighbor with us to Target and it was a nightmare. He sat on the floor kicking and screaming, because I told him he had to walk next to the cart. I figured if my 3 year old could handle it, he could too. We were planning on meeting his dad at the zoo, so I told him we'd go straight home if he didn't get up. He then decided to run off on me and DS followed. I had to chase him down as he screamed and knocked into everything. Everyone was staring and I was mortified.
DS hasn't done anything remotely like this, so I have no idea what to do or if my expectations are too high. We ended up going to the zoo since his dad was waiting for us. I did tell him that he has lost all privileges of going to the store with us in the future, but I don't think he really cared.
Re: Does your 6 year old throw tantrums?
well, unfortunately, yes, but not in the way you described.
a) they're almost always at home (not where others can witness and where she's most comfortable)
b) never for anyone other than dh or me
Christmas 2011
I've only had a 6 year old for 8 days now. Her last tantrum was a all out fit in our front yard not wanting to bring in a motorized car, needless to say...she came inside (with a little force) and was placed in her room where she wasn't allowed out, she fell asleep in less than 10 mins. That was about 1-2 months ago.
My DD wouldn't through a fit like that. I expect my kids to stay with me in the store, they can be 3 feet behind or in front of and I am still cool (as long as they aren't in someone elses way). I wonder if he is not used such rules (although you are NOT wrong to make them).
I agree, my child would not act like that for someone else.
