Babies: 9 - 12 Months

WWYD: Dragging leg while army crawling

My daughter has always been right on the cusp of doing things late.  I joke that she is God's lesson in patience.

She recently started army crawling (as in about a week and a half ago).  She doesn't move her left leg when she does this and cannot crawl on her hands and knees.  Is this normal?

She can stand like a champ and even hold onto things and move but she generally keeps her left leg locked the entire time and just pivots.

I am wondering WWYD, wait til the 1 year visit or call the pedi?

Re: WWYD: Dragging leg while army crawling

  • My lo will crawl normally only on a blue moon...otherwise it is how she sees fit!

  • Well its nice to know I am not alone.  The pedi did tell me that she needs to be crawling or walking by 12 months.  She will be "delayed" if she is not doing it by 15 months.  I feel like the pressure is on!

  • She's probably still figuring it all out! DS JUST started army crawling 2-3 days ago after months of scooting backwards, in circles, and whining. He kind of looks like a zombie when he does it because he doesn't quite have his rhythm figured out yet. I'm sure she'll get it with more practice!

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

...big brother to...???? Due March 2014!

  • All babies crawl differently. For a long time my son would do what we call a spider monkey crawl. Only thing that touched the ground was his hands and feet. But after awhile he started crawling "normal".

  • J does the same thing. He keeps his left leg straight & his left arm is tucked under his chest. He looks like the guy in Misery when he's crawling to the dor to escape. Haha.

  • Nathan crawled on all 4's at 8 months. Ryan army crawled and dragged one leg behind him from 8-10 months. He just recently started getting up on all 4's a couple weeks ago. As long as she's getting around I don't think it matters. Not every kid crawls the traditonal way.

  • This is completely normal.

Abby never army crawled, but she does drag her leg. We joke that she is Quasimodo. Whenever she is on a hard surface and doesn't want to hurt her knees, she will crawl by stepping with her right foot and dragging her left leg.

Lilly does the same as Abby on hard surfaces. It's pretty funny.

OP, sounds normal. My nephew did the same thing and my MIL said several of her kids did the same thing.

  • C would crawl normally except for one leg that tried walking instead. He did that for a little bit even after he started cruising and walking some. I would say normal unless she has other issues you are concerned with, but if calling the pedi helps reassure you, then go for it.

  • DS2 army crawled for a few months before crawling on his hands and knees. When he did army crawl, he only used one foot to push off on, really. Crawling on hands and knees isn't even a real milestone, frankly.

Will she put weight on her left leg? If you're really worried, call your doctor and see if they can get her in and possibly get a referral to a physical therapist.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • My DD crawls weird too.  Don't worry about it.
  • DS used to keep his left leg straight when crawling but just in the past couple weeks stopped sticking it out. Sometimes when he crawls on the kitchen floor he won't go on his knees, he'll go up on his toes. Babies do funny things.

  • Katie drags her right foot when she crawls.  The pedi said it wasn't anything to worry about.

When she really wants to get some speed, she plants that thing flat on the ground and propels herself forward.

    We call it "Turbo foot".
