3rd Trimester

GD girls please enter ;)

I have to go for a non stress test twice a week from now until DS is born. Well, today when I went in the nurse was telling me that DR'S usually don't let woman with GD go past 39 weeks before inducing. Have any of you girls heard of this as well? Just wondering if it's something that every DR does. If they decide to induce me at 39 weeks it will be on November 28th. There goes my Thanksgiving! ;( Boo!

Also- everything was fine. They had to give me a can of diet sierra mist to wake baby up and I had one contraction. But, everything looked great. I have a U/S in 2 weeks to see how big baby is.

Re: GD girls please enter ;)

  • I had GD with DS and I was induced at 39 weeks and he was over 8 pounds.

  • I;m being induced as well at 39 weeks just for safety reasons. If he doesn't come naturally before that.

  • I will be induced at 38 or 39 weeks.  I find out exactly when on Monday.
  • Interesting... I guess I will ask doc at next appt. I guess I might actually get my wish of going early! Smile
  • i think it depends on the doctor.  i had to go for the NSTs last time every week from 35-40 weeks.  I was induced on my due date = 40 weeks.  BUT, it wasn't b/c my dr was worried the baby would be overweight, it was just b/c my body was really ready (effaced, dilated, baby had dropped) and i was wearing out.  So, i think if you are measuring well and your GD is under control, your doctor will probably let you go naturally if you want.  if not, question it - they really shouldn't force the induction unless they have a good reason.
  • I just asked my doctor about this yesterday. If I am "good" about managing my GD and the baby is "normal" size, my doctor will not induce until 40-41 weeks (if necessary). He believes inducing early increases the odds of an unneccessary c-section.

I imagine if I can't keep my GD under control and the baby is really big, he would consider inducing early (and possibly scheduling a c-section at 39 weeks or so). But right now, the plan is to let me get to my due date and go from there.

  • When you have GD, the placenta breaks down faster the closer you get to 40w. However, there is a concern that babies ith GD mamas are slower to develop lung capacity. So they want you to go as long as you can so baby's lungs can mature ... 39 or 40w, but not over that, because of the dnager of the placenta breaking down.

Not every OB feels the same way about it. some will let you go naturally and just keep monitoring ... some will induce a little early. They are also worried about the size of the baby and the development of the baby's shoulders.

That's not to say anything like what I mentioned above will happen ... but these are the reasonsings behind what you were told.

  • I am type 1. (sorry, i say that each GD post) anyhow, I too start having non stress tests twice a week starting next week. My baby is measuring bigger. 4 weeks ahead as of Friday. However, Dr. wasnt too inclined to give a stopping point for my pregnancy. In general, the risk of having a still birth baby is higher with diabetics (i am speaking for type 1, not GD) for births after 38 weeks. So, I think we will probably not go past 38 weeks, but i would think most doctors try to let you go as long as possible for the health of the baby.  Best thing you can do at this point is watch your sugars. I am more worried about my sugars now than ever because the higher your sugars are towards the end of the pregnancy the more insulin baby is making to try and lower his sugar. This is what requires some diabetec babies to end up in the NICU because of low sugars after birth.

    good luck!

  • I have my Dr. Appt. tomorrow with a new doctor so I will be asking her about inducing and all that jazz.
  • That's what my MD has planned. She told me that the bigger GD babies are the more likely they are to develop diabetes later in life, and that they tend to do better if they are a little smaller. Also the placenta tends to degrade faster with GD so they don't get as much nutrition and oxygen.

  • I was told by my Dr. that I wouldn't be allowed to go past 40 weeks. Of course that was two weeks ago and I am now 31 weeks so my baby can still grow too big if I don't keep my GD under control which will force them to have me deliver earlier. It's really up to me. I too have to get NST's twice a week.
