I have to go for a non stress test twice a week from now until DS is born. Well, today when I went in the nurse was telling me that DR'S usually don't let woman with GD go past 39 weeks before inducing. Have any of you girls heard of this as well? Just wondering if it's something that every DR does. If they decide to induce me at 39 weeks it will be on November 28th. There goes my Thanksgiving! ;( Boo!
Also- everything was fine. They had to give me a can of diet sierra mist to wake baby up and I had one contraction. But, everything looked great. I have a U/S in 2 weeks to see how big baby is.
Re: GD girls please enter ;)
I just asked my doctor about this yesterday. If I am "good" about managing my GD and the baby is "normal" size, my doctor will not induce until 40-41 weeks (if necessary). He believes inducing early increases the odds of an unneccessary c-section.
I imagine if I can't keep my GD under control and the baby is really big, he would consider inducing early (and possibly scheduling a c-section at 39 weeks or so). But right now, the plan is to let me get to my due date and go from there.
When you have GD, the placenta breaks down faster the closer you get to 40w. However, there is a concern that babies ith GD mamas are slower to develop lung capacity. So they want you to go as long as you can so baby's lungs can mature ... 39 or 40w, but not over that, because of the dnager of the placenta breaking down.
Not every OB feels the same way about it. some will let you go naturally and just keep monitoring ... some will induce a little early. They are also worried about the size of the baby and the development of the baby's shoulders.
That's not to say anything like what I mentioned above will happen ... but these are the reasonsings behind what you were told.
GL!
I am type 1. (sorry, i say that each GD post) anyhow, I too start having non stress tests twice a week starting next week. My baby is measuring bigger. 4 weeks ahead as of Friday. However, Dr. wasnt too inclined to give a stopping point for my pregnancy. In general, the risk of having a still birth baby is higher with diabetics (i am speaking for type 1, not GD) for births after 38 weeks. So, I think we will probably not go past 38 weeks, but i would think most doctors try to let you go as long as possible for the health of the baby. Best thing you can do at this point is watch your sugars. I am more worried about my sugars now than ever because the higher your sugars are towards the end of the pregnancy the more insulin baby is making to try and lower his sugar. This is what requires some diabetec babies to end up in the NICU because of low sugars after birth.
good luck!
