s/o GERD

GERD mommas, what kind of Zantac are you giving your LOs? We have a liquid right now that I have to draw up in a syringe twice a day...for each baby. And half the time they spit it right out because I guess it tastes awful to them. It is MESSY and way time consuming. So I have to keep doing this until they are 12 months? Please tell me there is an easier way...

Re: s/o GERD

  • Curious since I dont have mine on RX yet.. but can't you mix it with their formula?

  • natb--I think you *can* mix it w/ formula, but I'm EBFing or giving a bottle of pumped milk and usually they don't finish their whole bottle, so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't get their whole dosage (0.5 mL)--either that or I would have to make 2 separate bottles per baby, and that's just not going to happen. I think I remember someone here saying something about a tablet? Devinjonesrn?

  • We did the liquid (smelled like peppermint?) and then we switched to a solutab, but it may have been another med, I think... Yeah, it was prevacid : (

You can always ask the Pedi/GI about switching, it's a lot easier.

  • A friend told me to buy these in case we ever need to give LO's medicine.  Her son takes a med for GERD and he drinks it down on his pace.  She said it works much better than the syringe.

  • We used to put our meds in a bottle nipple and have them suck it out. It is also what the nurses did in the NICU... you could always mix just a couple mls of milk with it to disguise the taste. Just keep your finger over the nipple hole until you get it popped into their mouth!

PS. GERD is my mortal enemy. MORTAL. ENEMY.

  • We give it in a small bottle of BM, before the full bottle.  Basically, I pour about an ounce out of DD's bottle, squirt in the medicine, and give her that first, so we know she gets the full dose even if she doesn't finish her bottle.  She doesn't like the taste of it at all (it's peppermint flavored) and would spit it out if we gave it to her alone.

  • I tried doing it in an ounce of milk or putting it in just the nipple, but it was always so much trouble.  Eventually I just squirted it in their cheek and they got used to the taste.
