WWBOTBD? re: white chunky poop

B had a few poops yesterday that were normal color, but with white cottage cheese like chunks mixed in. She is EBF, no solids yet. Today I got a call from daycare saying she was "not herself" - pretty fussy, wanting to be held, spitting up & drooling more than usual and also not wanting to eat much.

I called Pedi & they said to bring in the diaper if she has another white chunky one.

WDYT? Could this be signs of early teething, or something more concerning?

Re: WWBOTBD? re: white chunky poop

  • Google says white, chalky stool could mean a liver or gallbladder problem. Could be her liver's not producing bile, or the bile is obstructed.  The gallbladder stores bile, so the problem could be there too.

    FTA:

    What Does It Mean?

A white stool might be a sign of a liver or gallbladder problem. Bile is a digestive fluid made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Your baby's stool gets its normal color from the bile as it is excreted during digestion. If your baby's liver doesn't produce bile, or if the bile is obstructed, his stool will be white.

    What Should I Do?

A white stool is very rare, but if your baby's poop is white, call your health care professional right away.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, call your health care professional right away:

    • Blood or mucus in stools
    • Fever
    • Vomiting
    • Irritability
    • Refusal to eat
    • Decreased or dark-colored urine
    • Decreased activity

  • ugh, thanks Pub. I did see that re: bile when I googled. But then I got scared, so I stopped googling. I was hoping you all would tell me that it's nothing...

    here's hoping...?

  • Hopefully it is nothing.  But I would for sure take her in if it happens again.

    Sorry for not sugar-coating. Embarrassed

that's OK. I would rather hear honest opinions :) I am def. going to watch her. We have the poopie diaper from last night as we use cloth so it's still in the pail. However it's a little gooey at this point from sitting out I think.

Ick!  Groossss.  I would say one or two more, and I'd have her butt in the pedi's office, knowing it could be her liver/gall bladder.

  • My DD also had white stools when she was around 9-10 months old but they couldn't find anything wrong with her. They still don't know what caused it. So there is still hope that it is nothing but it is still worrisome. I freaked out as well.

  • My pediatrician said that for the most part, different poop colors were normal, but to make sure to see him if it was red, white, or black.  I would make sure to see the doctor.

  • DS had white poop (the whole thing was white, not just chunks mixed in with normal colored poop) when he was probably 1 and a half. The color was more off-white, like the color of the posts on TB (the one above where I'm typing right now). It happened a few times, but just in one day at a time, so I didn't take him in. But if it has been ongoing I would have.
  • go post this on parenting- I think this happened a few times over the years to moms over there, and I think they were all no big deal. (despite what google says!)

    good luck.

  • Hopefully it's nothing but definitely take her in if it continues. Jack had that issue while in the NICU.
