Question for BF'ing mamas

How much milk does LO drink from a bottle when you pump? DD has never had a bottle and tonight will be the first time! I'll be out with some girlfriends for a few hrs. so I'm pumping now and will leave a bottle in the fridge for DH to give to her. Is 3-4 oz. sufficient? She nurses every 2 hrs. during the day. I hope she takes the bottle! I'm really nervous she won't!

Re: Question for BF'ing mamas

  • More is better than less! Mine eats about 6 ounces on average and I exclusively pump. Hopefully she does well. I would check the nipple size and make sure it will flow enough for her but not too much. THis is one part of frustration my little one has. Good luck! I am out tonight as well and praying my husband doesn't have a meltdown. (he gets a little stressed when I am gone all night)

  • My son is 3 months and nearly 1 week, and nurses approximately every 3 hours. When he goes to childcare, the bottles I send for him have 4.5oz each. He seems satisfied after his bottles, and sometimes doesn't finish the entire thing, so I assume this is a good amount for him.

I'd guess, since your daughter nurses more frequently, she may be taking in less at each nursing session, so you might be able to get away with 3-4oz?

Good luck! I always get really nervous when it comes to bottles, too. I'm always scared he'll be hungry! Luckily, you'll only be gone a few hours, so even if you don't leave exactly enough, she can catch up when you return in a few hours.

  • 3-4 oz is enough for my boy - we only give bottle occasionally, though, and I generally want him to be hungry when I get home.

Yea token said it. When I had surgery I gave DH 8 oz for a 30 min procedure and she drank it all. I'm not sure exactly how long it took total with the prep and anesthesia wake up but it wasn't 4 hrs I'm sure.

  • Thanks, ladies! I'll only be 15 minutes away and will drive separate so I can come home early if needed. Hopefully DH can handle DD for a few hrs.!

  • My LO gets one pumped bottle a day (the rest of the time EBF) and it's 7 oz, sometimes she wants more so I'll give her another oz.
  • My LO typically has 4oz (except 1st feed of the day 4.5oz).  She is around 11 1/2 pounds.

  • Oh, that's another good point. Kellymom has a good article that gives some really great tips for bottle-feeding a breast-fed baby. I read over that and gave DH some pointers before he gave our son his first bottle. I'm sure they don't follow those guidelines at childcare, though, and Jonah does just fine.

  • 4-5 ounces is what my Gabs is drinking from a bottle. Thats the amount I get from 1 boob when I pump and it's usually sufficient.

  • Thanks, everyone. I got home last night and the milk was still in the bottle! DH said Gabriella cried even more when he tried to give her the bottle. She wouldn't take it. So much for giving her a bottle for the first time!

yeah that happened around here as well. after 3 weeks in a row of trying every night and various bottles.  she finally took a tommee tippee bottle. and she still will only drink like an ounce or two. she prefers boobs.
