Anyone else fail their glucose test?

Not gonna lie, I'm totally stressed out because I completely failed the glucose test this morning. I'm totally a normal weight, everything else is perfect except for my dang sugar levels. Now I have to go back in on Thursday and take a 3 hour long, detailed test to see if I have gestational diabetes. Not a good time and I'm totally letting my hormones get the best of me!! I can't stop crying.....ridiculous, I know - but I can't help it! Damn pregnancy hormones....

Re: Anyone else fail their glucose test?

  • Yep, I failed with flying colors too.  I'm not all that worried though - my mother (a registered dietitian) explained to me that in recent years, the thresholds of sugar to warrant the three-hour test have been lowered for liability purposes, so a lot of women fail the one-hour test.  Just try to relax until you get the next set of results.

  • How many sugary things are eating each day?

Well that makes me feel a lot better, thank you! I hope that's the case with me. I've had a little bit of a sweet craving lately, but nothing crazy. I'll maybe have a little ice cream cone or a few chocolate chips here and there but not anything accesive. I do eat a lot of fruit though. I wonder if that's affecting me?

  • My doctor told me that so many women were failing the 1 hour test but passing the 3 hour test. That's why she had me just do a 2 hour test with 3 blood draws. I actually appreciated it because like you, I would have be worried if I had failed the 1 hour test.

    Good luck!

Wow! Well that's good to know, thanks!.....I'm jealous! Why couldn't my doctor have been as cool and let me do the 2 hour! Now I'm stuck waiting to do the 3 hour...sucky, suck, suck. I think the worst part will be the fasting. I hate having to fast before having blood drawn.

  • I just had my 3 hour test on Friday of last week - this is copied from a post on the board I'm most regualrly on....I really felt gross with all the sugar and the not eating but the test itself was more boring than anything else....

If anyone out there is wondering how this test is....

First, the test actually takes 4 hours, not 3.  Duh.

I had to fast starting at midnight.

They drew blood  before the glucose. Then I drank the same amount of glucose (by volume) as the 1st  time but it was twice as sweet so it was especially yucky to a dedicated "water only" gal like me.

Then three more blood draws on the hour.

I got really sick at about 2.5 hours - between the high glucose and the lack of food, I felt really awful.  I threw up once.  Headache.  Nothing too terrible but it wasn't pleasant, either.

I'm back at work now (obvs. being very productive) and once I got some real food into me, I perked right up.

Just FYI if anyone was wondering....hopefully the results will come back and everything will be fine. :)

Thank you! This made me feel better. At first I thought it was my fault and that I was giving into the sweet cravings too much, but it didn't make sense since when I do give in it's only in moderation here and there.

Obviously I'm still hoping everything is normal after this dreaded 3 hour test, but if not at least I know it wasn't due to something I did.

  • I failed the first 1 hour test, but was fine on the 3 (4!!!) hour test. Don't freak until there's actually a reason for it. Don't forget to drink water though. By the second draw I had a hard time giving the blood, because I forgot about my water I had brought. With that sugary crapola in your tummy, it might be hard to put anything else in there, but the water will make it easier to find the blood. I am all for less pokes. Good luck!

  • I'm taking mine now! Last pregnancy I failed the one hour and easily passed the 3 hour. They actually let me go after 2 blood draws because my levels were good. Don't worry. Lots of people fail the first one!

  • I'm on my second time around with gestational diabetes.  Lots of people pass the 3 hour test, so don't stress out.  You haven't done anything wrong, it's just the way the placenta affects your insulin levels.  Even if you do have it, it's not the end of the world.  It's not fun, but it's manageable and you can still eat good food.  Best of luck to you!

  • I failed last time but passed the 3 hour. Try not to stress its no big deal. And actually if I fail the one hour this time. i have already told my OB that I do not intend on putting myself through the 3 hr again, too stressful and the results were fine. he said it was fine with him, there are many other factors and things to consider besides that one test. Don't stress just relax it was porbably a false positive.

I would not tell her "it was probably a false positive".  I failed my 1 hour with DD1 and only by 4 points, when I took the 3 hour a week later, I failed 3 of the 4 draws, the nurse said after my 1 hour she thought for sure I'd be fine for the 3 hour test, but I failed miserably.

Also, someone said they drank water while doing the test.  My lab wouldn't let me have SIP of ANYTHING.  They told me, too, that if I threw up, I would have to repeat the entire test.

Sounds like alot of DR.'s do thing very differently, OP, try not to stress out, as this will not help your numbers, and isn't good for you or baby.  The diet isn't horrible, and you'll more likely gain less weight through the last months of your pregnancy (hey! That's a plus right?!)  Good luck with your three hour, bring a good book, or a project to work on, and try not to think of what may or may not be!

  • Oh yes, they told me that about throwing up, too. Not to mention when I was really woozy after draw 3, they asked if I wanted to try the test again another day. Um, NO? It would be the same situation, regardless of what day it was.

I had my test done at a local Quest Labs. They let me have water, even encouraged it. That was all I could have though. -__-

  • OK - just got back from my 3-hour test, and honestly, it wasn't really bad at all.  At first, I felt awful right after I drank the glucose stuff (which, thankfully, they chilled nicely and tasted mostly like orange soda).  But as the three hours passed, I felt less and less sick.  I still chose not to go into work after, because I don't do particularly well with blood draws, but I've had a PB&J sandwich and some coffee, and am able to work from home, at least.  I'm hoping the results come back positive!
