We did it separately until about 10 months. At that point, they were both sitting up well and crawlign well and would sit still in the tub. Before that, when we put them in, they either couldn't sit well enough on their own or were still working on crawling and we couldn't get them to stop practicing long enough to bathe them.
We've been bathing the girls together in the big girl tub for about a month now... they are very good sitters at this point.
We used the infant tub until about 6 months, and once they could sit we used the sink (we have deep tub sinks in our kitchen).
We waited until they were more reliable sitters before moving to the tub... also we were tired of the gigantic puddles in our kitchen from the insane bathtime splashing.
I am not a MoM just yet but we used one of those Munchkin bath sponges and placed it in the tub w/ just a very small amount of water and bathed DS#1 this way prior to when he could sit up on his own. We were planning on doing this again w/ the twins (once they get a couple months old), and I am *thinking* it could work as long as they can't roll off the sponge or anything and just making sure I have everything I need in the bathroom after bathtime.
Here is kind of a pic of what it looked like (I won't lie, it was not comfy on my back bending over tub as I am 5'11" but I figured efficieny would be biggest priority once the twins get here).
