Considering moving to the area...any advice??

Hey ladies...my hubby might be transferring to northern KY (about 30 miles south of Cincinnati) from Oregon, and I was wondering what the teaching economy is out there. I graduated with my masters in teaching 2 years ago, and I have been subbing ever since. Jobs are sooooooo scarce here in Oregon!! I am a mommy to a two-month-old so I will probably still sub for a while, but I am wondering if I would have a better chance finding a job out there!!

PS...my hubby's job is in Hebron, so we are also wondering what areas are good around there to look for housing!!

  • I work in Hebron, and you aren't 30 miles south of Cincinnati - more like 15 minutes south from downtown. Hebron is a city that is kind of in transition. They are building like wildfire out there, but it is kind of far away from everything you will need. There are some great neighborhoods in Hebron (Tree Tops & Thornwilde). It's more of a manufacturing and distribution area.

If you want a newer home, Burlington & Union will be your go to citites. Both are close to Florence which is where everything is basically located (Target, Mall, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, tons of shopping, restaurants, etc.) Burlington would be an easier commute to Hebron than Union. Florence has a mix of new and old depending on where, but mostly older.

If you want an older home with character, then Crestview Hills, Edgewood, Ft. Wright, Ft. Mitchell, Villa Hills area will be great locations to search.

As far as teaching can't help you there. The area has a heavy concentration of private Catholic schools. I don't care for Kenton public schools and prefer Boone public. As far as Boone public the only high school I wouldn't want my kids to go is Conner which Hebron filters into.

We are in Burlington now, but just sold our house to move to Florence in the Hearthstone subdivision. Our new home filters into Cooper High school which was just built. However, we are doing private Catholic education into Immauculate Heart of Mary which filters into St. Henry or in my case since I have all girls -  Notre Dame Academy (all girls Catholic).

    Hope this helps!

  • Oh and take in the Oregon scenery before you leave. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Oregon. I used to work for Nike and would get up there several times a year. So beautiful.

  • I live in Alexandria, KY and we like our neighborhood (Summerlake part of Fischer Homes,) except there isn't much developed down here yet. I think we have like 4 major restaurants within 6 miles or so, and a Meijer, Kroger and Walmart, along with a lot of smaller stores, but thats about it. I am currently a sub for Forest Hills, which is in Cincinnati, and I applied to Campbell County but they said they weren't hiring subs last year. But I don't mind the 25 minute drive to Forest Hills and its a great suburb of Cincy. Wonderful school district. I've heard that Fort Thomas is a good school district if you're looking in Northern KY. Otherwise, for just over the river, I would say the closest good school district is Forest Hills. Good luck!

  • I live in Union and love it. We live in the Stratford subdivisio.n We are close to the interstate, good schools: Ryle district, shopping, food, and Florence.

I used to live in Hebron and loved it. I know the other poster said she wouldn't want her children to go to Conner but I went there and enjoyed it. I was in all honor classes and learned quite a bit. My only problem was the overcrowding but it has improved since the new school was built. My favorite subdivisions were North Point, Parlor Grove, Tree Tops, and Thornwilde.

I have family that lives in Burlington and that is nice as well.

My mom subs for Boone County and enjoys it. I work for Kenton County schools and enjoy it but I believe both typically get a lot of subs and may not have openings for subs when you come.

    Good luck with your decision.

  • Oh my goodness!! Thank you for all of the great info!! We have both lived in Oregon all of our lives, so picking up and moving halfway across the country away from our families is kind of freaking me out!! It is nice to have this forum to get the local opinion :)

We will see if the job opportunity pans out, and if so, I will need some new friends :)

  • I know very little about Northern KY, so the ladies above gave you a lot of good insight.

What are you certified to teach?  There are teaching jobs out there, but the market is tight.  If you have a speciality area (special ed, science, math, etc...) those jobs are easier to find than elementary jobs.  GL!

  • We live in Independence and really like it, but it is not very close to the shopping which is all in Florence. As far as teaching goes, I graduated in 2008 with my B.A. and have yet to find a job in NKY. I taught my first year in Wiliamstown but that is a good 35 minute drive from Independence. There are simply no openings for teachers here. I am currently subbing for Kenton county schools and get called pretty frequently once the school year gets going. As far as where to send your child to school, I would much rather be in the Kenton county district over Boone County. Boone county is the largest or one of the largest districts in the state, but it lacks a lot in technology. Kenton county is very much ahead of them as far as technology (SMART boards in the classrooms and that sort of thing). Boone county does pay a little bit more than Kenton county though. But, like I said, I have been applying for teaching jobs since last year and have heard nothing. Luckily, I am happy subbing and being a SAHM. :) LOL If you really want to teach, I would try subbing or maybe considering going over to Cincy. I have no idea how they are as far as hiring teachers. GL!
  • We live in Burlington, KY (close to Hebron) and love it. We're in a rural area, but 20-30 min to everything. There are plenty of subdivisions in the Burlington area as well.

It's Boone County school district, and I don't know about jobs exactly, as we've just started looking closer at the district for schooling for DD, but it is pretty well rated as a district. And the district is HUGE, so I would imagine they would probably have an opening somewhere (total speculation).

Here's a link to the HR section of their website. Employment Opportunites are to the right.

Oh, and an early welcome to you!

  • I am new to Northern KY. Moved here from the east side of Cincinnati for my husband, but he grew up in the area. Right now we have a 103 year old house and with #1 on the way, will be looking to move in the next 2 years.

We plan to buy in Ft. Thomas. It is a great neighborhood, but I am not sure how close that would be to your husbands job... It has great Catholic school options as well as Exemplary public schools with a small town feel.

  • I was born and raised in the middle of California so moving here was a big difference in that it's the Tri-State area. I say it that way because I've lived here for a couple of years and have traveled all over the area. Don't limit yourself to just some posh neighborhoods in Kentucky. There is character all over the area as far as housing goes. There are some really cool, non cookie cutter houses out there in good places that really aren't far from everything. On any given day I can find 12 houses I would love to own because of the diverse architectural periods around here. As for finding a job as a sub? I know that there are some and again I wouldn't just look where you might be living. This area is pretty big. from some of what I read Mason is a good district for educators. I'm in the Hamilton area just north of Cincinnati and would be about an hour's drive give or take, just to give you an example of how close everything really is when you learn all the in's and out's. Welcome to the area :)
