I got DH a new one for Father's Day, he takes it to work to watch movies on nightshift. I bought one of the lower end ones from Walmart, sorry I can't remember the brand and it is in his work locker. He is happy with it, and I didn't spend more $80.
If you are confident about charging an ipod when you are in India, I would recommend that for your DS. I bought a bunch of shows that DS's likes, and he watches on the ipod when we travel. Much smaller and easier to pack.
the best one we had was from one of those savings stores (like big lots) it was cheap, had a good sized screen, remote, and car charger, too.
we have gone through quite a few of them in the past 4 years - since we let the kids work them they often don't last too long So my advice is to get any cheap one that has a nice sized screen
the brand name ones we have had worked no better (sometimes worse) than that awesome cheap one.
I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.
