At what gestation do you not take adjusted age into consideration?

My DDs were born at 36w6d, so they were (are) technichally preemies. Just wondering if I need to take their gestation into account when thinking they "should" be doing this or that at a certain age? I don't think their birth weights matter but in case I'm wrong, they were 6lb 15oz and 6lb even. They had no NICU time and came home with us when they were 2 days old.

  • I think it really depends on the kiddos.  My LOs were born at 30 weeks and I still very occasionally adjust... like when they couldn't jump at 24 months... then I do think oh wait they are really only 21.5 months.  But I would say since they started walking and talking I haven't really adjusted.

  • Mine were born at 36w4d, and I adjust for most things b/c I've found they do everything about 4 weeks later than most babies, especially DS.

  • My kids were born at 35w2d and I adjusted those first few months with things like smiling and laughing, but by 6 months they were doing everything within the normal time period that I quit adjusting.

  • Mine were 37w 1d, so not preemies but I still adjust for sleep issues and Wonder Week developmental leaps.  We've hit all milestones on time, if not early, but some of the other stuff seemed to come a little later.  The closer we get to a year, the more it falls somewhere in the middle of their actual age and adjusted age.

  • Typically for developmental milestones they adjust for corrected vs actual age until the age of 2. Of course this does not mean they wouldn't achieve milestones before then, however when I used to do developmental/ language assessments for little ones (I work as a Speech Pathologist) this was always the norm.

This, except mine were 32 weekers.

  • At 4 months mine are meeting all the milestones the doctor asks about, so I don't think about it much. But I do notice sometimes that mine hit their growth spurts three weeks later. They were born at exactly 37 weeks.

  • From what I've heard drs usually don't adjust age for babies born after 37w, sometimes 36w so I think you could probably go either way with yours. I do remember reading in Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child to go by adjusted age for "babies born before their due date" with sleep stuff, when fussiness peaks, etc. Even for my boys being just 2 weeks (15 days) early I did find that to be true when seeing how their sleep patterns developed.

  • I adjusted in my mind until my Pedi said my kids caught up to their actual age, which for us was only recently. But even now there's a wider range for the big milestones so even if they were still 5w behind I wouldn't know. If they're late at whatever milestone I try not to get worried until they're over 5w late.
