Hey ladies. I got put on 50mg of Zoloft today. I am 32 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and have been having serious anxiety issues. For those of you on Zoloft, how long did it take to work, did you have any side effects and what did you do to help control yourself until it worked? I feel so out of control. I experienced something similar after I had my daughter, guess it was post partum but I was so stubborn that I refused medication. There is no way I can deal with this on my own now. Anyway, thanks for any advice....

Re: Zoloft/Anxiety during pregnancy
I dunno.. but I need some too.
I am having such severe anxiety right now.. its freaking me out.
"I was prescribed zoloft yesterday 50 mg also but I only took half."
why would you mess with a prescribed dosage???? *eyeroll
Yes, I am waiting for a counselor to call me back now. I definitely need to talk to someone. What a crappy crappy feeling. They said if I feel that out of control, they will want to admit me and regulate me in the hospital until I feel well enough to go home. that sounds scary!
Thanks!!
I will preface this by saying that I work in Pharma and have some personal and professional understanding of SSRI's (of which Zoloft is one) and anxiolititcs.
Zoloft is an SSRI and works on regulating the serotonin in your brain. In layman's terms it is something that allows for serotonin to stay in your brain pathways longer- making you have less depression and.or anxiety. Other simlar drugs include, prozac, lexapro, paxil, effexor. Meds like zoloft can take up to a month (+) to work, some like Lexapro, work a little more quickly. Some people report feeling the effects around 2 weeks. Remember to take them every day and at the dose prescribed.
Acute anxiety - like panic attacks or moments of overwhelming stress and axiety- (for some this might be a life event- loosing a family member, getting fired, and for some this might just be a panic moment.) are sometimes treated with an SSRI (over time) or an acute med- like xanax, ativan or clonopin. These meds work within an hour and are used on an as needed basis.
I would call my doctor and ask about acute anxiety/panic medication as well as an SSRI- also making an appiontment with a psych is a good idea.
