We left for Montana at about 4:30 am, and K slept all the way to Spokane. We ended up making it one day, just making sure that every time we stopped we gave K lots of food and lots of run time at a park or grassy area. That worked great, but she was a tyrant the last 30 miles [mostly on gravel roads pulling a trailer in a thunderstorm...]. We did stop in St. Regis like many suggested, and K had a big helping of huckleberry ice cream that helped her zonk out
Anyways, we broke up the trip back to two days, and that wasn't terrible. Mostly that was for us, to break up the driving. We camped at an RV park north of Spokane that had a pool and play equipment. K did pretty great, even when we got stuck in Easton after a crash on I-90 had us stuck for 2 hours.
The biggest downside? Well, two things: 1. MY MIL. I may be certifiable now. Seriously, don't teach a child to throw toys on day one and then screech at her for throwing toys on day two!! 2. K has calmed, but on our first days back she started fighting her car seat like mad - I wish you could explain to a 15 month old that we're only going to the store this time, not back to MT!
Thanks for all the tips! Extra toys to rotate and long breaks for meals and play were huge.
