pediasure for 14/15 month olds?

My LO one is almost 15 months old and only 20 lbs 5 oz.  He is just a peanut so I thought about adding Pediasure as a afternoon snack to gain some weight - anybody do this and if so when is the best time - I don't want it to ruin his appetite for his full meal.

Re: pediasure for 14/15 month olds?

  • My DS is 16 months old and only weighs 19 lbs. 14 oz.  His pedi suggested either PediaSure or Carnation Instant Breakfast shakes at bedtime, that way he doesn't burn the calories as fast.

What I do is mix his evening cup of milk with half the PediaSure or Carnation.  Right now I'm using the banana flavored PediaSure...which he isn't a big fan of.

  • Has he always been small or did he recently drop in weight?  If he's always been small, I probably wouldn't.  If he's recently dropped in weight, I may.

The way i figure it is they aren't going to underfeed or overfeed themselves.  They know when they are hungry and will communicate that to you in some way.

Thanks so much I plan on talking to Dr in his 15 month checkup next Friday as well - tonight I gave DS Target Up and Up brand Strawberry Pediasure and he LOVED it so maybe I will continue to do that for his before bed sippy then that eliminates my concern of it replacing a meal - great idea thanks so much for your feedback!  I will also try the Carnation as it will be much cheaper.

He was 6 lb 6 oz born and has always been between 5-15% weight at 12 month appt he was 20 lbs even.  Just this week I had to bring him in for ear infection and he was 20 lb 5 oz -  I expected more as he really felt like he was going through a growth spurt.  He eats well and really is active.

I also worry how much the daycare lady feeds him - I need to start questioning her more I think.

If this is a concern, I would definitely address it!

FWIW, DD actually lost weight from her 12 - 15 month appt.  1.5 pounds to be exact.  She's a chunky monkey so she had it to lose, but with them being more active it's not uncommon to lose/stay fairly the same.  I'm sure he's shot up in height.

Check with your dr next week and see what they say.  Good luck!

  • we had to remeasure him at his 12 month and stretch him out good to make him be on the chart for length - I do think he has stretched out more since 12 month - will be exciting to see next Friday!

  • There really is no need for it unless he is a poor eater. He might just be a slow gainer. I think my DS was only 21 lbs at 15 months old, but was 26 or 27 lbs by his second birthday, which is completely average for that age.

One of my closest friends has a DD who is almost 5 years old and only weighs 28 lbs (yes, you read that right!).  She is a horrendous eater, the pickiest of the picky. My friend's pedi instructed her to try to get as much high calorie food into her for breakfast and lunch, give the Pediasure in the afternoon several hours before dinner, and then try to get a decent dinner into her.

  • My DD is 14mos and 17 lbs, so she's on pediasure. She gets 12-16 oz/day to supplement her diet. If the pedi thinks it's a good idea, get a script for it so that your insurance covers it. GL.

  • DS never eats a big breakfast, so I give him Carnation Instant Breakfast in the morning.  There is a chocolate flavored no sugar added one, and he LOVES it.  He gets all excited when he sees me get the packet.  He thinks he's getting a treat, but really, he's getting protein (since he refuses to eat barely any meat).
