Maya or Maia

My husband and I are having a disagreement on how to spell Maya (the traditional spelling).  He wants to spell it Maia (if we have a girl) but I'm not convinced.  What do you think?

For kicks and giggles, the middle name will be Jean (after my late mother).  My choice is Maya Jean.

As a teacher, on her first day of school I would call her ma-e-a. That doesn't strike me as Maya.

Eh, I think both are fine, but I think that Maya looks better with Jean.

I like Maya but to each their own. My name is Brittany, which is fairly common, and there are a ton of variations to the spelling. It's never been a big deal.

i know a maia and there has never been any confusion but i think maya is a lot nicer.

To me, they are 2 different names.  The girls I know named Maia pronounce it my-E-uh, which I happen to love.  It was actually on our list but I figured that no one would be able to pronounce it so we threw it out.

Maya. Maia needs to buy a consonant. My REAL favorite, however, is Maja (Scandinavian spelling) but I'm probably not typical on that one.

I'd pronounce them both the same, but I think Maya looks nicer, and since it's the more common spelling, you'll never have a problem finding it on school supplies and personalized stuff like that!

 

 

I was jealous of all of the Laurens, Nicoles and Jennifers when I was a kid, my name is never on ANYTHING.  The one time I found it, it was the title of a book about a girl who's birth mother tried to have an abortion and it didn't work.  I believe it was "Gianna: Aborted and Lived to Tell the Tale"....fun stuff.
