question about bath towels - are the expensive ones worth it?

I have always bought cheapies. But, if you buy more expensive towels, are they s worth the extra money?

Re: question about bath towels - are the expensive ones worth it?

  • I think so. My favorite bath towels were relatively expensive (for towels) but they are the softest, most plush towels that I have. They also wash really well and the color hasn't faded.

I usually buy towels from JCPenny or Macy's

  • i had one really nice one and it didn't do anything extra for me. I'm happy enough with my target ones.

  • IME, the price point doesn't matter so much as the kind of cotton. Organic cotton or Egyptian cotton ones will be ~$10-$15 for the bath sheet size, but so soft and fluffy and they will hold up much better than the cheaper ones.

We've also discovered that our cheaper ones have held up much better since we stopped using fabric softener, too. That's probably a "duh" moment, but DH always just used it w/o a second thought and it wore out our towels super fast.

  • In the past I have bought them from Target or BBB. I am curious about whether buying from Macys or Garnet Hill would be worth the money. But the idea of a $28 towel makes me VERY skeptical.

  • All I know is, the cheap towels at my house suck. They're usually shoved in the back of the towel closet. They don't absorb anything!
  • For me, yes - to an extent. I buy towels at Macys during sales, or Target. I won't buy $40 towels, but I'll spend money on them. I try to wait until I have a coupon. I do use Ikea cheapie towels for my hair and I freaking love them. They're gym towel sized but thinner.

  • To me, yes.  I don't pay full price on them though.  Macy's often has good sales on the more expensive towels.  I've had some of them for years, and they hold up well.  The ones I like most are Ralph Lauren.
  • We stocked up at Costco the other day and they were well worth the $12 a towel.  I will never go back to cheap towels.  I also only buy white so I can bleach them if needed.

  • I buy the Thomas O'Brien ones at Target and really like those.  So they aren't the college $1.99 ones, but they aren't too pricey.  I can usually find them clearances for $8 or so.

  • I have target towels and pottery barn towels i got on sale. I much prefer the pottery barn ones but at $15/ towel on sale i had a hard time spending the money.
  • The ones that are between 12-20 are good, and noticeably softer, fluffier, less prone to shrinking, than the cheapies.

You can get good ones at Target, JC Penney, Macy's, etc...

The ones at places like Williams-Sonoma home?  Hell no.  $50 for a towel is ridiculous, and no one will ever convince me it is worth it.

  • I had some cheap ones when I got my first apartment that did not even last the first year before falling apart.  They also got really thin and not absorbent after a few washings.

I also like the bigger sized towels which tend to be more expensive.  I really like the ones I bought at JC Penney.  I stocked up on Black Friday and they've lasted many years.  They were a brighter red and never faded.  With the early bird sales or $10 off coupons, they don't have to be very expensive.

  • We have Lenox brand towels, from Macy's.  They are 70% cotton and 30% bamboo.  I don't remember how much they were, but I think they were more towards the 'expensive' side.  They are heavenly!  Still soft and fluffy after 3 years, and they haven't faded in color.  We got them as a wedding gift.

  • My favorite towels are the ones my DH brought to college 10 years ago. They're thin and a little rough but SO absorbent.

  • We have a few bath sheets - I freaking love them. They are from BBB and are giant and comfy.  We got them for our wedding, and I will dig through the closet for them instead of getting a different towel.
  • Yes, I think so.  We have mostly Target towels, but my personoal ne are from Macy's.  They are Royal Velvet Big and Soft.  iknow they were expensive, but they are at least 10 years old and going strong.  I lurve them.
