Two Under 2

Shopping cart question

My DS is getting to big for the baby carrier and HATES the ergo. He is 21 pounds and already in 12-18 month clothing so the bjorn is just too small but he likes to be facing outwards (freaks out when facing chest-to-chest in the ergo)

Normally I have DD in the cart sitting and I wear DS but now that he has gotten so big I am not sure what to do?

If I put DD in the "main" part of the cart she very likely will climb out, throw the groceries or stuff I am buying out of the cart or take stuff off the shelves as we pass by.

Has anyone encountered this before and what did you do?

Re: Shopping cart question

  • I'm in the same situation. My plan is to shop at a store with the carts with two seats and then the cart in front. My DS2 stayed in his infant seat for a long time, but he's walking now and I can't see how he would tolerate it. (DH has been home from school all summer but just went back which is why I'm now facing this problem). I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to get from the car to the store if none of the double carts are in the parking lot. I'm thinking a stroller might be involved.

  • My DD is little, so she just grew out of the Bjorn.  We went to target on Tuesday and the plan was to get one of the shopping carts with the two seats in a plastic car facing the shopping cart.

However, after carrying them both in (one on each hip), there were none of these carts available.  So we started with DD in the front seat, and DS walking but holding my hand.  He did well for about 5 min, then he started taking things of the shelves that he "needed."  So I put him in the big part of the cart, and just kept saying that he needed to stay sitting or I was going to pick him up and carry him.

He did pretty well, and he really liked holding everything.  In the past, when he was antsy in the seat, I would go to the book section and get him a book to look at while we were in the store - that was going to be my plan to distract him if he was not behaving, but he did fine without it.

    Good luck!

  • Can you back carry your older child in the Ergo? I just bought a Boba so that I could carry either kid in it. I plan to back carry my 21 month old that is 29 pounds and let my younger daughter sit in the seat of the cart when she is big enough.

  • As soon as #1 was old enough to walk we started working on walking beside us in the stores. If he is sleeping, he gets to lay in the main part of the cart until he wakes up.

I know most kids under two can't handle walking in a straight line responsibly in public - so realistically that probably isn't very helpful.

  • A friend of mine uses 2 carts- one for the kids, one for the groceries. Sounds like a pain, but it would work.
