Multiples

Got my first dumb comment

Yesterday I went to the local coffee shop to pick up lunch where a girl from church works. She did the usual 'congrats on the twins' comment like most people. I also said my usual 'thanks, it was a great surprise'. She was floored when I said it was a surprise, and thought we did something to try or make sure we have twins. I have no idea how someone makes sure they have twins so that it isn't a surprise, but she sure seemed to know!

  • Well to her defense, perhaps she meant that you had medical intervention, which would increase your chances of multiples... maybe?!  LOL

DH's grandma's family member (don't even know them) are convinced that we "went looking for twins" (inferred we did IVF, etc).  No one besides our parents/siblings know that we actually did, so of course DH's grandma is totally insulted and tells me the story every time I see her.  :)

  • If you do injectable fertility medications and IUI -- or you do IVF and you can select the number of embryos you transfer -- you will have a much higher chance of twins (the doc told us with the IVF we're doing, we have a 40% chance of twins). A lot of people are actually selecting to do it that way because they prefer twins (or more, in the case of Octomom). That's what she meant. She didn't mean any harm by it.
