Success after IF

Do you consider a mani/pedi a splurge?

I see a lot of my FB friends say they do, but it's just part of my every 3 weeks regimen. I can't paint my toes to save my soul, so I gladly pay someone $20 to do it for me. :)

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

Re: Do you consider a mani/pedi a splurge?

  • I never used to, but since having D I kinda do- I think it is actually more about the time it takes.

Over the winter a pedicure is a splurge because my feet are never out. Over the summer, I consider it maintenance!

I love getting manicures, but I feel like the just chip 2 days after the fact, so I usually go to have them shaped and then just clear polish them myself at home.

  • If it only cost $20 and I lived in SoCal, it would be a regular part of my "upkeep" routine.

Pedis where I go are closer to $35-40. I don't go as often as I'd like. And, typically, I have to pay a sitter, too. So, yes, at this point, it is a small splurge for me.

  • I do shiny buff on my nails! But I only get a mani every other time I go.

  • I should add that I am lucky that the pedi place is right next to my office so I can easily go on my lunch break. I am very lucky to have that setup. ;)

  • I didn't when we were DINK's but I do now since DH was laid off and is now working 1/2 time at a job that ends in December (hopefully he'll be called back full-time before then).

I used to go regularly in the summer and semi regular over the fall winter for pedicures, I've never really gotten regular mani's.

  • it's a splurge in a sense that it is usually my only "me" time. i get a mani every other week and a pedi once a month. it's definitely part of my "maintenance" but at the same time a splurge, because if time is tight that is the first thing that gets knocked off the schedule.

  • actually, I'd have to go change my answer. I do consider a pedi a splurge. I wash my hands so often that I don't get manis. But I love a nice spa pedi and it is a splurge. It's just something we don't really have room for in the budget.

But I DO make room to have my eyebrows threaded once every 3-4 weeks. I can't go without that, and i'm so bad at doing it myself.

I second the Shellac mani...love it!  I don't consider mani/pedi's a splurge at all.  It's just about the only "me" time I get some days and I deserve it!

I did that a couple of times last year and I did not like what it did to my nails when I stopped doing it.

  • Financially, no, timewise, yes. I used to get them every 2 weeks before kids, now I get a couple a year because I don't have the time to prioritize them.

  • It's a splurge for me.  I do love them, esp. pedis, but I don't do them often.

  • I haven't had a manicure in forever.  I work at a wound center, so it would be soooo pointless.

I do get occassional pedicures...but only when I have some me time.  Now that Caro is back in school and I am working less, I'll be doing it once a month or so until the baby comes...

Oh wait, he's coming in a month...well, okay, I'll get one before he comes and then who knows when, lol.

  • Back when i was single/newly married, no. I had acrylics and went all the time.

Now, total splurge but I am poor.

  • If I could find someplace close to us where I could get a mani/pedi for $20, I'd do it all the time, too!

A pedi is at least $40 here, the mani is $20-30.   So yes, I see it as a splurge to spend $60+ per month on my nails.    Before becoming a homeowner and a parent, I had gel nails and paid $60 every 2-3 weeks, and I LOVED IT.   but now I just can't justify the expense.   I get pedicures every couple of months in the fall/spring/summer, but that's about it.

  • Not really although I don't get them as often as I used to now that I have kids.  It's really due to time but I used to get a mani weekly and a pedi every 3 weeks or so.  Now, I rarely get manis b/c I feel like my nails get ruined so quickly afterwards and I still get pedis but maybe every 4-5 weeks.

  • I never used to, but we have really pared down our lifestyle since moving back to Buffalo, me staying at home, etc...so yes, now dropping a $100 on a mani/pedi is a definite splurge. I could do without the mani and usually do in favor of the pedi. I try to go every couple months - it is good "me" time.

  • Yes, since I can easily do it myself for almost pennies.

I just don't get them - it isn't worth it to me. I look at it this way - if I went once a month for a pedi, which is about 40 bucks around here, plus a 20 % tip, that's 576 bucks a year. Since I stopped getting them done about 5 years ago, I figure I saved $2880.

Would I rather have pretty nails, or a fun vacation every 5 years?

    Vacation!

  • Yes.  Time wise and money wise,  We certainly aren't poor, but I can't justify 50 bucks (including tip) every couple of weeks on something I can do myself.    My mom paid for me to get a pedi when I was visiting in June.  It had been at least a year before that when I had one.

  • Definitely not a splurge.  Like you, it's part of my regimen.  I go every 3-4 weeks.  I also get my hair cut every 5 weeks.  DH is onboard with both.  It's maintenance.  MIL on the other hand does not agree.  Oh well.  Not her body, not her money.

  • Mani and pedi are part of my routine like 3 wks for my toes and I get my nails done every other week. I have been doing that shalck on my nails so it's been lasting longer. I
  • Not really, but they feel like one because I enjoy them so much! I will go less often  in the winter when my toes aren't exposed 24/7 with flip flops, wedges etc., but I still love going. I also can't do a good job myself, so I consider them worth it. They are actually much cheaper in San Diego than in Las Vegas, and I have a place 1/4 mile away that is only $25 for a spa mani/pedi with a hot stone massage. It is AWESOME!

  • Imo a pedi is a required aspect of good foot hygiene.

  • Considering that I've only ever had one pedicure in my life (this past May), and it was a Groupon at that, um, yes! I've never had a manicure.

I really don't think I'd feel that regular manis were worth it -- I have great nails (when I don't have a baby, ha). They are usually long, very hard, in great shape without trying.

I would LOVE to have regular pedis, though...More for the foot soak/scrub than the polish part. I would have them at least once a month if I knew a reputable place that was $20!

do guys have poor foot hygiene?

  • Honestly, two teacher salaries + a nanny for three + living on the East Coast meant that most things were a splurge for us.  I think that $20 is totally reasonable for a pedicure, but some months it was hard to justify spending any money on ourselves with the rising costs of gas and food.  So I guess I consider it a splurge personally, just because we don't work in a very high-paying field and COL was pretty high.
