Need Suggestions/Ideas: Baptism Gift

Hi Ladies -

So, my SIL just had a baby a month and a half ago, and this weekend her daughter will be baptised. She has asked my husband to be the godfather. In general, for baptisms and christenings, I give a card and a check - but my husband really wants to give a gift since he's going to be the godfather. (I didn't know he wanted to give a "gift" gift, or I would have tried to think about this sooner!)

Do you have any suggestions?

Our one idea so far: We were thinking perhaps a little diamond cross necklace that her parents could keep for her and perhaps give to her once she gets older (but I don't know if her parents will think that's just a whole lot of trouble.)

Re: Need Suggestions/Ideas: Baptism Gift

  • I think it's a lovely idea...those types of sweet gifts meant a lot to me as a little girl and when I got older and appreciated them even more.  I'm curious if others have any input as I'm attending my best friend's baby's baptism this weekend, and have no idea about etiquette, gifts, etc as I'm not religious at all and not the godmother.

  • In our family the godparents give the baby a gold bracelet and a gold necklace (google cadena de bautizo)... there are other options too...

  • Hi Ladies - Thanks for your feedback! I think we're going to go with the necklace... now we're just deciding which one :-)

  • Things Remembered has some beautiful things for Christenings as well. It sounds like you've decided on a necklace, but other ideas would be a personalized cross to hang above baby's crib, a bible with their name on the cover, and if they're Catholic, one of the best baptism gifts we received was the godmother gave a donation to the Marions (an order of nuns) who then prayed for our son every day for a year. I thought that was really neat!

  • This might be a little late, but a great gift is an add-a-pearl necklace.

You start out with 1 or 2 on the chain (one for the birth and / or one for the baptism) and then for each milestone  (birthdays, graduations, etc.) another can be bought to add to it.  Then when she's all grown, she'll have a full set of pearls and they each represent something from her life growing up.

I've never heard of that! It's an awesome idea!

Also, if I were Catholic we would so be doing the donation to have nuns pray daily, that's too neat!

Thanks, ladies, for all of your suggestions!
