MFM preconception consult after pre-e?

I had pre-e with my first son at 36 wks and at 33 weeks with my second son. We want to have a third child, and had our OB refer us to a MFM for a preconception consult. Are there any women here that have had a consult after pre-e or hellp that could give me an idea of what to expect?

 Thanks!

Re: MFM preconception consult after pre-e?

  • I had pre-e with my son which lead him to be born at 30 weeks. I had a consult with MFM recently and didn't really get much out of it. He wanted me to go in for blood work to test for different blood clotting disorders and he said that my chances of getting it again with the next one is 20-60%. He basically said that we wont know what will happen until I am well into my pregnancy and at that time we would treat as he thought we should. I was disappointed and I know my situation was not as bad as some other women I have talked to but I did have my son at 30 weeks so it had to have been bad. Hope you find the answers you are looking for!
Mom to former 30 weeker born early to Pre-E. Now happy, health and growing at home!
  • I had one before I got pregnant again.

Essentially they did a work up for any sort of thrombophilia, along with a few other things. It was a lot (LOT) of bloodwork, a 24 hour urine, and a BP journal for 30 days. For me, the biggest concern was looking at my kidney function (they had taken the biggest hit when I had my son) or any other underlying conditions (clotting disorders, diabetes etc) that could contribute to pre-e. All of my tests came back 100% normal.

They ballparked my risk of recurrence 12-25% (which was lower than I was expecting, actually) and discussed a plan for my next pregnancy.

Currently I'm 24 weeks pregnant. My son was born at 26w2d. We'll see what happens.
