Babies on the Brain

36 week delivery and risk?

I have a FB friend who is delivering any time.  Her water broke this morning at 36 weeks.  She is pretty nervous, yet excited. What complications can happy with an almost full term delivery?

Re: 36 week delivery and risk?

  • I think the biggest risks are jaundice or not being able to regulate body temperature.  Or possibly not latching well (if she is going to BF).  But I think usually babies born at 36w do well.

  • I believe most 36 weekers are fine.  However, my BFF had the exact same thing happen at 36 weekers.  Her LOs lungs weren't mature and he ended up in the NICU for a week.

  • My water broke at exactly 36 weeks. I had him the next day and he was just fine. He was jaundice, but only needed 1 night under the lights.

    I hope all goes well!

  • Button was born at 36 weeks and there were no complications with him.  My water broke and off to the hospital we went.  He weighed 7lbs 11oz.

But that's not to say there won't be any problems.  If there are going to be complications, it would probably be with lung development and breathing issues.

  • i think the biggest concerns for a 36weeker are Jaundice and immature lungs

  • Thanks ladies.  Her step-mom updated and said they are trying to keep the baby in until tomorrow if possible.  They are giving her IV antibiotics and a shot for the lungs. They are asking for T&P.  She isn't due until Sep. 21.  I am guessing she isn't exactly 36 weeks.

  • hopefully they can keep the baby in for a few more days, at least 24hrs after the 2nd steroid shot.

  • What PP said. It really depends on the baby. Some have mature lungs, others don't and need a lot of help. That being said, if they are in a hospital where they can get the help they should do well with time.

Sept 21 is exactly 4 weeks from today.  T&P sent.

  • I had DD at 36w2d and besides a little jaundice she was healthy as a horse. She didn't need light treatments or a stay in the NICU.

    T&P your way!
