The pump is "thumping" my nipples

For the first 2.5 months I was using the rental symphony. If the tubes weren't screwed on properly, then when it pumped, my nipples would, for lack of a better way to decribe it, "thawck", or "thump" during each pump.

Well, I returned the symphony to the hospital, and now am using my PISA that I got used from a friend. No matter how well the tubes are "screwed on", my nipples still "thump" with each pump.

Is this normal?

Re: The pump is "thumping" my nipples

  • I really cannot picture what you are describing. I would see if your hospital has an LC you can speak to or go to an LLL meeting with your pump. Maybe you need different sized horns?

  • I ditto pp-I can't picture what you're saying. Do your nipples hit the sides?  (is your pump on straight?)

  • This is hilarious. I know exactly what you are describing. I am still renting the symphony but have used my pisa 3 times. Each time I've used it, it makes this noise. I thought it was normal.

  • I know just what you're talking about I have a lactina and it happens when the suction isn't sealed all the way around the horn.  Make sure there is nothing in the way (like the edge of your bra) or gently press the horns into your brests for a few pumps to seal up the suction.

I think the horns are fine. My nipple is pulled all the way into them, and even when I'm 100% toples and pushing the horns in, I still get it

    Change your membranes.

I did, thinking that may have been the case. No change. What is weird, is using the same horns, membranes, tubes, everything, there' no thwacking while using the symphony, but there is with the pisa.

So, I take it that the pisa isn't suppossed to do this? I'm fine with it....it doesn't hurt, but will it mean I get les milk?

  • try some nipple cream around the edge of the flange to get a better seal, I've had this happen a few times with my PISA when there was something messing with the suction like the tubes not stuck in tight enough into the flange or the power cord not plugged all the way in. If none of that works I'd call Medela and let them troubleshoot..

  • I always thought this was the sound the PISA makes. Sounds normal to me.

  • When this happens, if no clothing is in the way and all connections are tight, I just have to turn up the suction, at least for a few pumps. That gets my breast pulled into the shield better and gets the nipple into the straight part, and it stops.
